In 1998, Mr. Buist expanded the practice by forming a partnership with his son-in-law, Custis Byars. The firm opened an office in Freshfields Village between Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island to more conveniently serve the growing number of residential real estate clients in the area. The Kiawah-Seabrook office team, now supervised by partner Joseph Garcia is now entrusted with the vast majority of real estate matters on the islands.

Real Estate Transactions
The foundation for the firm now known as Buist Byars Taylor LLC was established in 1958 when founding attorney Thomas G. Buist joined his family’s long-standing Charleston law firm, Buist and Buist. In his 45 years of practice, Mr. Buist handled some of the largest real estate transactions in the state of South Carolina, including the sale of Kiawah Island in 1974 and the certification of the title for its re-sale in 1993.

Land Use and Zoning
Counseling developers, builders, owners, prospective buyers, lenders, and land use organizations, our commercial real estate team works through the entire spectrum of land use issues.
Landlord-Tenant Disputes
Another partner, Hamlin O’Kelley, is responsible for the firm’s property litigation practice. He represents homeowners and property owners associations, and handles landlord tenant disputes, foreclosures, quiet title actions, construction litigation, title insurance defense as well as general litigation matters, across South Carolina and beyond.
Property Damage
While we hope that homes built or purchased by our clients will all be well-constructed, unforeseen problems sometimes arise. Issues with poor workmanship, defective products or design defects can be daunting for a homeowner, as the rules and laws that pertain to insurance coverage and workmanship/product claims are complicated, and in many cases, time-sensitive.
We are pleased to offer recommendations for professional services and for legal representation in areas of practice on which our firm does not focus, such as personal injury, family law, more extensive estate planning, and criminal defense.
