Macular Degeneration
Patients who are myopic are at a significantly higher risk of developing glaucoma, a retinal detachment, and a specific type of visually debilitating cataract. In addition, patients who are highly myopic are at risk of developing a potentially blinding condition called myopic macular degeneration.

Cataract Surgery
As we mature, the natural lens in our eyes firms and loses itâ€™s flexibility, decreasing itâ€™s ability to keep itâ€™s shape for different ranges of focus. This normal condition is known as prebyopia. Some patients may choose to have a procedure called a Refractive Lensectomy before developing cataracts, in order to correct their presbyopia and reduce or eliminate their need for reading glasses. You are taking medications with ocular side effects, e.g., isotretinoin (AccutaneÂ®*) for acne treatment or amiodarone hydrochloride (CordaroneÂ®t)for normalizing heart rhythm, because they may affect the accuracy of the LASIK treatment or the way your cornea heals after LASIK. This may result in poor vision after LASIK.
