South Gate Tavern

Right outside of the Thayer Gate of The United States Military Acadeny at West Point, the South Gate Tavern is full of Army memorabilia-- everything from photos of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to the patches young Military Police peel off their uniforms and have the bartender hang behind the bar.

The owner is Irish (this is a family run establishment-- the owner's son is head bartender and manager) so the pub has an Irish feel as well, lots of dark wood, signs from Ireland, and good music on the jukebox.

Definitely worth a stop if you are looking for a place to warm-up during Army football games, or for a cold beer on a hot day. Generally quiet during the day, but a place where the young people of Highland Falls and the senior West Point cadets hang out on weekend nights.

Great food (Italian) and great service.
