A: Your primary care physician may refer you to a nephrologist, or you may consider contacting a nephrologist if you are experiencing protein loss in the urine, blood loss in the urine, repeat/chronic urinary tract indections, repeat kidney stones, a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30 or lower, high blood pressure that does not respond to medication, accelerated decline in kidney function, acute renal failure, and chronic kidney disease.
