Medical Weight Loss
Gallbladder Surgery – Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) secondary to gallstone formation is quite common in the U.S. By age 65, 10% of men and 20% of women have gallstones. Most are cholesterol stones associated with obesity and rapid weight loss. Stones are also seen in people with hemolytic anemias such as sickle cell disease.
Emergency Care
When a gallstone gets wedged in the outflow duct of the gallbladder, it produces colic, a severe, crampy pain the right upper quadrant of the abdomen that brings the patient to the Emergency Room.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a procedure that enables us to evaluate the appearance of the inside of the colon (large bowel). This is accomplished by inserting a flexible tube (fiber optic scope) that is about the thickness of a finger into the anus, and then advancing it slowly, under visual control, into the rectum and through the colon. It is performed with the visual control of either looking through the instrument or with viewing a TV monitor.
Diarrhea

Colon Cancer
This test may be done for a variety of reasons. Most often it is done to investigate the finding of blood in the stool, abdominal pain, diarrhea, a change in the bowel habits, or an abnormality found on colon x- ray or a CAT scan. Certain individuals with previous history of polyps or colon cancer and certain individuals with family history of particular malignancies or colon problems may be advised to have periodic colonoscopies because they are at a greater risk of polyps or colon cancer.

Montclair Surgical has provided personalized and cutting-edge Breast Surgery for over fifty years. Our surgeons are versed in the newest and most sophisticated techniques available for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. Biopsies can often be done under ultrasound guidance during the patient’s initial office visit, thus minimizing the wait for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. Our surgeons were the first to perform Stereotactic Biopsy at Mountainside Hospital and currently utilize the vacuum-assisted Mammotome Biopsy system with the latest software package. Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy are now considered routine procedures. Oncoplastic techniques are utilized to minimize scarring and disfigurement. Our goal is to care for our patients with breast disease as expeditiously and compassionately as possible.

The Montclair Surgical Group was initially organized by Dr. Harrison Wesson. Dr. Wesson had been first assistant during the 1930’s to Drs. William and Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was the first Board Certified surgeon in the Montclair, NJ area and served as Governor of the American College of Surgeons, retiring in 1979. In the late 1960’s, he recruited Dr. Francis Wyckoff (Mayo Clinic) and, in the ‘70’s, Dr. George Saj (Tufts/Cornell). Drs. Joseph and Robert Barbalinardo, Saj and Wyckoff incorporated the group under its current name, Montclair Surgical Associates (MSA), in 1995. Dr. Silvia Fresco was brought into the group in 1999 as its first member to receive training in Laparoscopic Surgery during Residency. Dr. Karl Strom joined in 2004, having completed his Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery with emphasis on Bariatric (weight-loss) Surgery. Dave B. Swerdlow, MD was Director of Colorectal Surgery at Mountainside Hospital and worked in close affiliation with MSA. Continuity of care for his patients was assumed by our surgeons after his retirement.

Breast Surgery
Currently, Montclair Surgical Associates employs four full-time surgeons. As is detailed in the biography section of this site, all the surgeons have excellent credentials, are Board Certified and are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. Additionally, members of the group have acquired additional specialized training enabling them to provide expert care in many areas. This includes Breast Surgery with Stereotactic and Ultrasound-guided biopsy, Colorectal Surgery with Total Mesorectal Excision and Colonoscopy and Advanced Minimally-Invasive surgery. The latter includes Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal surgery, anti-reflux surgery for GERDS and Advanced Bariatric Surgery for Obesity (Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, and Revisional Procedures).

. He completed a fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Calin specializes in Robotic, Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic, Advanced Gastrointestinal, Foregut, Colorectal, Hernia surgery as well as Endoscopic Balloon Dilatation and Stenting. In addition to his over 15 years of diverse surgical experience, Dr. Calin also has an extensive background in research and has been published in many publications. Dr. Calin is fluent in French and Hungarian.

Lesions
Colonoscopy is the best test available to detect and treat abnormalities within the colon. The alternatives to colonoscopy are quite limited. Barium enema is a less accurate test performed with x-ray. It misses lesions more often than a colonoscopy, and, if an abnormality is found, a colonoscopy may still be required to biopsy or remove the abnormality. At times, an abnormality or lesion detected with a barium enema is actually stool or residual food in a poorly cleansed colon. Colonoscopy may then be necessary to clarify the issue.
