A:Psychologists have advanced doctorate degrees (PhD., PsyD) in psychology and are fully trained in the practice of psychotherapy and psychological testing methods. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O) specializing in behavioral medicine and mental illness. As a physician, in addition to training in psychotherapy, a psychiatrist is also medically trained in neurology and internal medicine which assists in diagnosis and treatment approach including the capacity to prescribe medications and to order and interpret medical tests.

Discretion and privacy is the primary feature of the Select-180 Program and treatment services including psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and nutritional planning conducted personally with Dr. DeSarbo, Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and an eating disorder specialist. Dr. DeSarbo’s team of professional specialists are available for a team approach, but only with a client’s request and permission. All records for clients in the Select-180 Program are kept confidential with Dr. DeSarbo, not accessible to other ED-180 staff, and are not a part of the office files.

If the eating behavior occurs in the context of another mental disorder (e.g. intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder) or medical condition (e.g. pregnancy), it is sufficiently severe to warrant additional clinical attention.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Dr. DeSarbo frequently lectures to professionals and the public and teaches certification courses on eating disorders and the neuroscience and biology of mental health to physicians and other health care providers. In addition to treating eating disorders, Dr. DeSarbo also treats patients who suffer from other conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, personality disorders, and works with couples on relationship issues. In addition to his extensive training in psychopharmacology, he has been trained in and practices psychodynamic, existential, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and considers mindfulness training and biofeedback a major part of long-term mental well-being. With the use of evidence-based medicine, Dr. DeSarbo combines the art of therapy with the science and biological understanding of the human brain and body to help clients understand themselves as a whole: mind, body, and spirit.

Still, an eating disorder, despite its harmful and even potentially lethal effects, serves a purpose: it acts as a coping tool. Granted, not a healthy one, but nonetheless, to the individual it is an escape from dealing with life stressors that cause pain to a person’s ego. An ED is a way to “self-medicate” just as alcohol, illicit drug use, gambling, sex, shopping addictions, and other harmful behaviors are for others. The “side effects” of self-medicating with eating disorders are what makes them have the highest mortality rate (even greater than depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc.) in all of psychiatry.

CJ, Gordon CM. Early osteoporosis is common among adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa (AN) and may result from premature conversion of red (RM) to yellow bone marrow. We performed right knee magnetic resonance imaging on a 1.0-T extremity scanner in 20 patients and 20 healthy controls, age 16.2 +/- 1.6 years (mean +/- SD). Coronal T1W images and T1 maps were generated from T1 relaxometry images. Blinded radiologists visually assessed RM in the distal femoral and proximal tibial metaphyses in T1W images, using a scale of signal intensity from 0 (homogenous hyperintensity, no RM) to 4 (all dark, complete RM). Subjects with AN exhibited nearly two-fold lower metaphyseal RM scores in both the femur (0.64 vs. 1.22, p = 0.03) and tibia (0.54 vs. 0.96, p = 0.08). In relaxometric measurements of 4 selected regions (femur and tibia, epiphysis and metaphysis), subjects with AN showed higher mean epiphyseal, but lower metaphyseal T1. The net AN-control difference between epiphysis and metaphysis was 70 msec in the femur (+31 vs -35 msec, p = 0.02) and of smaller magnitude in the tibia. In relaxometry data from the full width of the femur adjacent to the growth plate, AN subjects showed mean T1 consistently lower than in controls by 30-50 msec in virtually every part of the sampling region. These findings suggest that adolescents with AN exhibit premature conversion of hematopoietic to fat cells in the marrow of the peripheral skeleton, potentially due to adipocyte over osteoblast differentiation in the mesenchymal stem cell pool.
