Dental implants are composed of titanium, zirconium, or combination titanium/zirconium screws that are surgically placed in the jawbone where the teeth are missing. This metal anchor acts as a tooth root substitute which becomes the supporting foundation or base of the crown (visible part of the tooth). After the implant has healed or bonded to the bone, a small post (or abutment) that protrudes through the gum is connected to the implant thus providing stable connectors for artificial teeth replacement.
Bridges
Dental implants are the gold standard for the replacement of missing or non-salvageable teeth. Dental implants provide the most physiologic option of replacing teeth by maintaining bone volume, avoiding cutting of adjacent teeth (fixed bridge), and authentic look and feel of natural teeth. For those who have lost the ability to eat certain types of food, dental implants allow patients to regain this ability as well as confidence in their smiles.
Dental Bonding

Root Canal Treatment
Isolated injuries to the teeth are common, and can require the expertise of different dental specialists. These injuries are treated with different forms of splinting (wiring or bonding the teeth together). If your tooth is knocked out, you should place it in salt water or milk and seek treatment immediately. The sooner the tooth is re-inserted, the higher likelihood of it surviving. Root canal is usually performed by the patient’s dentist or specialist (Endodontist) after the tooth is stabilized. If the tooth is not salvageable, dental implants are a likely option to replace missing teeth.

Dentures
A small amount of bleeding is to be expected following the operation. If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply biting pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, a moist tea bag can be used for 30 minutes. If bleeding occurs, avoid hot liquids, exercise, and elevate the head. If bleeding persists, call our office immediately. Do not remove immediate denture unless the bleeding is severe. Expect some oozing around the side of the denture.
Overdentures
A single prosthesis (crown) is used to replace one missing tooth. A partial prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces two or more teeth that may need only two or three implants. A complete dental prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending on which kind of prosthesis is needed. There is also a removable prosthesis (overdenture) that snaps on to stable anchors directly connected to each of the implants (locator abutments) or connected to all implants (bar attachment).

Dental Implants

In addition, the fabrication of a final prosthesis is completed prior to the surgery. The computer-guided implant surgery is done in an arthroscopic fashion without requiring any flap reflection. This benefits the patient in that there is less postoperative discomfort, less swelling and less bruising. Patients can often resume their normal activities the next day.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Dr. Arzadon has privileges at the Washington Hospital Center. His special interests are facial cosmetic, dental implant, and reconstructive surgery. Since he first opened his practice, Dr. Arzadon has performed over a thousand facial cosmetic procedures and placed thousands of dental implants along with major bone grafting as well as routine oral surgery and maxillofacial surgeries.
Jaw Surgery
For those who may suffer from improper bites or jaws that are malpositioned, orthognathic surgery might be a solution. As a child develops, sometimes the upper and lower jaws grow at different rates creating misalignment of jaws. This can affect chewing, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance.
Pre-prosthetic Surgery
Maxillofacial Surgery
Migrated from the Philippines in 1973, Dr. Joseph M. Arzadon, an Oral, Maxillofacial and Facial Cosmetic Surgeon, was raised in Alexandria, Virginia, where he attended local schools. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from the George Washington University, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Maryland School Of Dentistry, and received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School Of Medicine. He completed his internship in General Surgery and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Connecticut Health Center, where he became Chief Resident from 1995-1996.
Tooth Extractions
After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.
Bone Grafting
Distraction osteogenesis refers to the slow movement of bony segments in a way that new bone can fill in gaps created by the separation. It can used as an adjunct to bone grafting where there is severe vertical defect (bone height) in the alveolus (bone supporting the teeth) and correction of other maxillofacial defects. The procedure requires making cuts in the bone (osteotomies) and placement of an appliance directly on the bone segments. The appliance is activated incrementally daily until the desired correction is achieved. After healing of the bone, the appliance is removed. Additional bone grafting to correct the horizontal defect (width) may be required.

Orthodontics
A team approach consisting of the general dentist, orthodontist, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon is essential to the successful outcome of the surgery. The general dentist will help maintain the health of the teeth and gums. The orthodontist will perform pre-surgical orthodontics to level the arches and align the teeth correctly in each jaw. By removing the dental compensations, the degree of skeletal defect is better realized and the surgical planning can then proceed. A post-surgical orthodontics is still required for final correction of the teeth positions.
Braces
After the surgery, the jaws are guided with rubber bands placed on the upper and lower braces. However, in rare cases, the jaws may be wired together for up to 6 weeks. The surgical splint is also placed to help guide the teeth in the new jaw positions.
