General Info
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that typically affects the legs and feet. Atherosclerosis is a condition that causes a blockage in the blood vessels due to plaque buildup on the artery walls. Peripheral artery disease occurs when atherosclerosis causes plaque buildup in the peripheral arteries. Leg pain or cramping while walking, also known as intermittent claudication, is the most common symptom of PAD. When the muscles in the legs are unable to receive oxygenated blood it can cause intermittent claudication. Wounds or ulcers on the legs or feet that do not heal in a reasonable amount of time are other warning signs. Other symptoms include ongoing tingling or numbness in the leg, discoloration of the legs or feet, and slowed growth of hair and nails.
