Crowns
Day or night grinding of teeth (bruxism) especially where there is evidence of enamel infractions. Infractions are tiny craze lines in tooth enamel. They can occur with trauma or differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion of dentin, enamel or various restorative materials. At times these micro-fractures preceed cuspal separation. Thermal sensitivity or discomfort when biting may be signs of iminent fracture. Intelligent use of occlusal guards can sometimes prevent or delay the need for expensive root canal, posts and crowns especially when grinding or clenching is present.
Bridges
For people missing just one or a few teeth, a fixed bridge looks and feels more like the real thing and provides near-normal chewing force. It's cemented in place over the natural teeth abutting the gap. But those end teeth first must be ground to stubs, to accommodate caps. Bridges can also weaken other teeth: a fixed bridge that spans too wide a gap can loosen the teeth it's cemented to.

Overdentures

Mike Kurtz grew up in Sunnyside, Queens. He attended P.S. 150 until fourth grade. In 1959 the family relocated to Hollis Park Gardens where he went to General Nathaniel Woodhull School (P.S. 35). A product of the New York City public school system he completed programs at Queens Village JHS 109 (1966) and Jamaica High School (1969). Afterward he pursued simultaneous studies at Boston and Harvard Universities.
