General Info
The focus of mathematics instruction in Mattole Valley Charter School is to develop mathematical power for all students. In order to accomplish this task, we utilize mathematics curriculums that are based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, California Department of Education, and local standards. We believe that mathematics is a language that is used to describe, identify, and investigate everyday challenges and problems. We expect all students to meet the standards in mathematics and thus demonstrate an understanding of how numbers are used and represented. Students will be able to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve problems. Students will develop algebraic reasoning. Students will be able to read, write, and discuss mathematics. Students will demonstrate how to solve problems using words and numbers and to use a variety of methods to solve a range of problems in practical settings. The study of mathematics in Mattole Valley Charter School emphasizes problem solving so that students can: Given that mathematics education is an evolutionary process, during their tenure in Mattole Valley Charter School, students will demonstrate a value for mathematics and become increasingly confident in their ability to communicate and reason mathematically. The students will be exposed to similar concepts at increasing levels of difficulty. The use of technology has altered the teaching and learning of mathematics. Calculator and computer applications allow students to explore patterns and relationships; manipulate real world data; investigate, conjecture, and verify their findings. Technology facilitates students' ability to be efficient in managing vast qualities of data, observe graphic representations of mathematical models and engage in higher level thinking. In Mattole Valley Charter School, students' mathematical abilities are assessed in a variety of ways. We utilize curriculum based measures along with performance assessments to provide a local view of how our students are performing. New this year, Algebra 1 is available through the internet for students to access from home (or any place with an internet capable computer.) The text, homework assignments and online tutor are all available online for students enrolled in our Blackboard course.
