Matthew Luginbuhl, PT, started PediaFlex in 2004. His passion at work is to help kids with neuro-developmental disabilities. He has extensive experience treating infants, young children and teenagers throughout his career. He graduated from UConn in 1996. Matt has worked over the past 24 years with kids through pediatric and adolescent employment opportunities including the Hartford Public Schools, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and the University of Hartford, as an adjunct instructor on pediatrics in their PT program. He’s a past Fellow of the UConn Related Services Collaboration Project for in-depth training of the historical and pediatric practice trends as it relates to the laws and models of practice in the integration of related services in the schools. He served as a co-investigator with the Center for Motion Analysis research project analyzing gait patterns in children with cerebral palsy. Matt holds distinguished recognition from UConn and UHart for excellence and innovation in clinical education.

Autism
Many of our kids struggle with combinations of difficulty. These can include gross motor mobility difficulties, fine motor challenges, visual motor challenges, and core postural control. The TAAP sequences of walking on to and riding off the treadmill is a great way to combine a therapeutic challenge that integrates these difficulties. The kids start out behind the treadmill, are given a specific task, walk onto the moving platform, touch, take or do something with their hands, and ride back off to the beginning. This has been a wonderful way to not only build strength, but incorporate visual-spatial orientation, postural responses and sequencing. TAAP has powerful potential to provide an avenue for neurological development. We have found it very helpful here at PediaFlex. This pdf article explains more about the use of TAAP here at PediaFlex. Botox
Intensive therapy is helpful for those looking to speed up their progress in both developmental skills and functional independence. Improvements are seen in body awareness, coordination, motor control, balance, and activities of daily living. As with all therapies, the plan is individualized and the treatment choices are unique to those expectations. There are a variety of treatment options including DMI exercises, use of the Spider Cage/UEU, medical treadmill, taping and suit therapies, constraint induced movement therapy, and much more. Intensive therapy can be helpful for young toddlers, older children, and teens with neurodevelopmental conditions including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delay, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, etc. Intensive therapy is also beneficial for children needing pre-op and post-op rehabilitation such as post-tendon releases, Botox, selective dorsal rhizotomy, and single event multi-level surgery (bony or soft tissue surgery).

Kelsey Hills, PTA, finished her Physical Therapist Assistant program at Naugatuck Valley Community College in 2019. She completed her clinical training in out-patient orthopedics & sports medicine, in-patient short-term rehabilitation, home care, and school based neuro-developmental pediatrics. Due to her academic performance at NVCC she was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. Kelsey also served on her class board as secretary. Kelsey has been around, and worked with, children from a very young age, and she is so grateful she gets to work with so many amazing kids every day as her job.
Physical Therapy
Our patients have experienced tremendous progress with the I ntensive M odel o f T herapy (IMOT). IMOT is most commonly referred to as “Intensive Therapy”. This approach consolidates and accelerates the child’s physical therapy plan of care. Kids in intensive therapy are scheduled for 2 hours a day, for 2 consecutive weeks. We encourage one or two goals to be focused on, while utilizing treatments that are most helpful in meeting those functional outcomes.
