You know how important brushing and flossing are for keeping a healthy smile — especially now that you’re in orthodontic treatment. But sometimes it’s harder to clean your teeth effectively around an appliance’s brackets and wires. Here are some tools and tips you can try for better tooth cleaning.
Fluoride Treatment
Depending on your situation, we may recommend an in-office or at-home supplemental fluoride treatment to boost your cavity resistance. An antiseptic rinse may also be recommended, to ease minor gum inflammation or irritation.

Crowns
If missing, impaired, or misaligned teeth are causing uneven stress and pain the dentist or specialist may be able to use crowns, partial dentures, or braces to reduce the stress and pain. Placement of implants or other oral surgical procedures may also be done to relieve your discomfort.

Oral Surgery
Crossbite: A palatal expander can be installed in the mouth to gently widen the upper jaw. This gradually provides more space for the upper teeth so when the mouth is closed they are not residing behind the lower teeth. When applied at a young age, the jaw is still growing quickly, so the guided expansion can be rather painless. If not treated early, more invasive and complicated actions might be necessary. Oral surgery sometimes is the only way to treat a crossbite if it was not addressed for some time.
Jaw Surgery
The growth of a person’s jaw is a steady process, and sometimes the growth of the upper and lower jaw can occur at different rates, causing a discrepancy in size and function. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping, breathing and other routine activities. Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Orthodontic treatment may also be used in conjunction with corrective jaw surgery to align the teeth appropriately. Although jaw surgery can dramatically improve a patient’s appearance, the goal is to correct functional problems.
Tooth Extractions
Crowding: Tooth extraction or a palatal expander can generate more space in a mouth for permanent teeth to emerge. While tooth extraction may seem extreme, when done at an early age, it is much less invasive than when done on older patients as less of the tooth is exposed and therefore the smaller gum line can heal faster.

Invisalign Orthodontics
By utilizing a series of clear overlay templates called aligners, the Invisalign system gradually moves your teeth in such a seamless manner that they are practically invisible. Some adults with bite problems that can be fixed orthodontically are great candidates for this system.
Braces
Orthodontic problems can affect both children and adults — even those who wore braces when they were young. That’s because teeth are more mobile than you might think. In fact, teeth move very gradually all the time in response to the normal forces of biting and chewing. But the teeth can also be pushed out of proper alignment when, for example, young children develop unhealthy habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. These and other orthodontic problems usually become apparent around age 7, when the permanent teeth have started to come in. That’s why an orthodontic evaluation is recommended for all kids at this age.
