In situations where diet and exercise alone are not enough, I favor the judicious use of medication to treat most common illnesses, as well as referral for specialty care when a more focused approach is required." Dr. Hettinger earned his medical degree in 2003 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. Dr. Hettinger is board certified in internal medicine. His primary patient-care interests include hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, COPD, and peptic ulcer disease. Dr. Hettinger's professional memberships include the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Hettinger was a Notre Dame Scholar from 1995-1999.; Dr. Hettinger also received the Illinois General Assembly Scholarship for academic achievement.; He chose to become a physician because of the great privilege of helping people in their time of need, as well as a strong interest in the science of modern medicine. Dr. Hettinger builds the best relationships with his patients through open, honest communication and a willingness to listen to his patients share their greatest healthcare needs. He encourages patients to come to appointments ready to talk about their healthcare in a constructive and forthright way. He is dedicated to helping patients become active participants in their care. Dr. Hettinger also empowers his patients to gain knowledge with regard to the therapies they are receiving.
