Free State Storage

I have been renting a unit here since 2014. While the units are a tad off on size, they are close (within a few inches). They are average in height. I have had no problems with the service and they have worked with me a couple of times when my payment was late to pay the late fee the next month. I have had no problems with leaks in my unit although mice do tend to try and come into the units like any storage place. A few moth balls takes care of that problem.

I am not sure where to begin. The whole charade is appalling and baffling. If I could rate this place a zero star, I would! Free State was recommended to us by a relative. The owner seemed nice at first (as they always do). We got one storage and eventually another small storage unit due to our move. The smaller storage unit, come to find out, collects WATER in the unit (due to rain is my guess). I am sure the owners of the storage are well aware of this problem (I am sure it has happened in this unit many times before) but they did nothing about it to remedy the mold issue. Thus, all of our important books, clothes and other miscellaneous items were saturated with mildew we had to through away hundreds of dollars worth of our possessions! It made me sick. Fast forward a few weeks, my husband called the owner of the complex and stated our last month (for the mildew unit) would be June 2014 and that month was PAID in full. He said he planned on driving out there (we live three hours away round trip) mid June to empty the unit. The owner just ASSUMED we were not going to use the whole month we paid for and without communication, removed our $400 practically new filing cabinet as well as a box of our possessions and said she "got rid of it". It appears she wanted to make some $ and just sell our items. Another ludicrous statement from the owner "I didn't have your number in my phone". Right. And we have been paying you and calling you each month with our credit card number and we leave you messages to call us back to take our card number and you all of a sudden now (conveniently) don't have our phone number. Liar.



Called today to inquire WHY she did such a thing and she hung up on me! I called back and said "you hung up on me". Her reply "oh, I'm sorry! I thought you said goodbye!" Playing her little game I can see past her fake and rude behavior. They are quick to call back and take payment but don't trust them to care a bit about your items you leave in their storage units.



I wouldn't touch this place with a ten-foot pole and we are considering legal action due to principle. Why people treat others this way we will never understand. What happened to treating others the way you want to be treated, good Golden Rule.
