Abigail Briggs is an Associate Attorney at Smith Butz, LLC. Abigail’s primary focus is on municipal law, oil and gas lease disputes, and construction litigation. Abigail was admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2022. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. While in law school, Abigail was a Research Assistant for a Law Professor focusing on bystander liability. In addition to her research, Abigail worked as a Law Clerk for a Downtown Pittsburgh law firm.

He is at the forefront of Gas Lease Negotiations, Local Zoning regulations on drilling, and the Litigation of Ownership of oil and gas rights. He has tried hundreds of cases representing individuals, businesses and municipalities in various courts and jurisdictions throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He counsels municipalities and is often appointed as Special Counsel to consult on matters relating to Oil and Gas Law and litigation issues. Mr. Smith was the lead attorney who successfully argued twice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on behalf of Pennsylvania local municipalities in the landmark case Robinson Township vs. Commonwealth. As a result, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found several provisions of Act 13, the Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Act of 2012, unconstitutional, returning zoning rights back to the peoples’ respective local governments.

Over the course of his 35 years in the practice of law, Mr. Butz has worked for some of the largest financial institutions in Pittsburgh. After starting his career with Mellon Bank Trust Department in the Estate Tax Compliance Department, Attorney Butz moved to National City Bank where he served as the head of the Trust Tax Department and Estate Planning Group. Mr. Butz eventually left National City to take a position with the accounting firm of PriceWaterhouse as a member of their Personal Financial Consulting Group. In this capacity, Mr. Butz assisted his executive clients with their estate planning, financial planning and income tax planning, and compliance.
