Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses reflected sound echoes to study and characterize internal structures and tissues. During pregnancy, a growing fetus can be imaged through ultrasound, without causing harm to the growing baby. Ultrasound is also an excellent non-invasive tool for examining the abdominal and pelvic organs as well as the thyroid and testicles. Our experienced sonographers (specially trained technologists) produce images that can reveal information about the shape, texture, and composition of tumors and cysts. The exam is painless. Ultrasound can also be utilized when visualizing a tumor or fluid from the body, allowing the physician to see the area of interest simultaneously with biopsy.
MRI
For your comfort and convenience, the Bethesda Outpatient Imaging Center offers a high-field, short-bore MRI located at Bethesda Health City. The high-field, short-bore MRI allows for fast scanning and is beneficial to claustrophobic patients.
Radiology
The registered nurses in the NICU have completed special certification for caring for premature and seriously ill infants. When possible, they help mom and dad participate in their baby's care such as feeding, bathing or changing diapers. The NICU team also includes specially trained respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists and radiology technicians to help babies in the NICU get the best start possible. In addition, a case manager is assigned to each family to help make arrangements for any special needs the baby may have when it is time to go home.

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine utilizes radioactive material. For routine diagnostic procedures, the patient receives an injection of the radioactive material (isotope). Upon injection, this radioactive material emits a pattern that represents the size, shape, and function of a specific organ. The amount of radiation emitted from the isotope is minimal.

The PET/CT scanner is a "hybrid" machine that combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with Computed Tomography (CT). The PET portion shows metabolic processes such as the activity within a tumor. The CT shows anatomical detail. The result of the overlaid image is showing both the metabolic processes and the location of the tumor. Knowing the specific location and metabolic activity of a tumor, doctors can make early diagnosis and have more information regarding treatment.
Chemotherapy
Many times, surgery is the first-line treatment for liver tumors. Another common treatment is chemotherapy, delivered systemically through the blood stream, or internally directly to the liver. Several criteria are used to determine if a patient is a candidate for Y-90, such as the level of liver function. Additionally, the cancer must be limited to the liver, or at least the majority of the disease should be limited to the liver.
Radiation Therapy
Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), also known as radioembolization, is similar to other interventional radiology cancer therapies such as radiofrequency ablations and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in that it is a minimally invasive, imaging-guided procedure. Interventional radiologist Richard N. Edelstein, M.D., with Bethesda Radiology Associates, performs the minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. Using a small incision in the groin, Dr. Edelstein places a catheter in the hepatic artery leading into the liver. Once in place, millions of the microscopic radioactive particles are injected. With precise intra-arterial placement, the microspheres are delivered to the tumors, limiting the impact on healthy tissue. In addition, many precautions are taken to minimize the risk of microspheres traveling to other organs.
Radiation Oncology
These PET/CT scans may be for Initial Treatment Strategy (diagnosis or initial staging), or Subsequent Treatment Strategy (restaging or response to treatment). The PET/CT Department works closely with the Radiation Oncology Department to coordinate diagnosis with treatment. Some PET/CT scans may be covered under the National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR) if not covered by regular Medicare.
Interventional Radiology
Our interventional radiologists are Board Certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available. Interventional radiology is a specialty to diagnose and treat diseases by guiding tiny tubes (catheters) through your body's vessels and organs using X-rays, ultrasound, and/or CT to guide them. This allows interventional radiologists to open blocked blood vessels, deliver medications directly to disease sites, obtain biopsies and perform a range of other procedures.
