Radical prostatectomy is a procedure that takes two to four hours to perform and requires at least a three-day hospital stay. Patients must wear a catheter for 10-21 days following surgery. Certain risks and complications are involved with prostatectomy, including bleeding, infection or cardiopulmonary problems. More serious problems can include urinary incontinence, stool incontinence and impotence. In fact, most patients experience some level of incontinence following the procedure that improves over time. Impotence was once inevitable following prostatectomy, but today that risk may be reduced with nerve-sparing surgical techniques.

Kidney Cancer
The most common type of kidney cancer in adults is renal cell cancer, which occurs slightly more often in males and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 70. Renal cell cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in tubules of the kidney and grow into a mass called a tumor. These tiny tubules filter and clean the blood, taking out waste products and making urine. In most cases, a single tumor develops, although more than one tumor can develop within one or both kidneys.
Kidney Stones
A kidney stone is a hard mass that develops when crystals separate from urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Stones develop in the kidney, but they may break loose and move through the ureter, bladder or urethra. Small stones pass through with little discomfort, but if they continue to build up and grow, this can cause intense pain.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer occurs when cells that are not normal grow out of control in the testicles, or testes. It is highly treatable and usually curable when detected and diagnosed early. In fact, testicular cancer is treated successfully in more than 95 percent of cases. Testicular cancer is most common among white males and least common in men of African or Asian background. Overall, testicular cancer is rare but is the most common form of cancer in men between the ages of 20 and 34.

Other treatments to break up stones may be necessary if a stone causes the complete block of urine flow, extreme pain that is not controllable with medication, or a urinary tract infection. These treatment options include extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureteroscopy. ESWL uses sound waves that travel through the skin and body tissues until they hit the stones and break them down into particles that can easily pass through the urinary tract. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy may be used if a stone is very large or in a location that is not conducive to using ESWL. In this procedure, a needle is passed through the skin into the kidney to break up or remove the kidney stone. Ureteroscopy uses a tube called a ureteroscope that is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter, where the stone is then broken up and removed.

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation in which radioactive material in the form of â€œseedsâ€ is placed into or near a tumor in the prostate gland. With this procedure, high doses of radiation can be delivered to the immediate area of the tumor, minimizing damage to nearby tissues. The procedure takes less than an hour and generally does not require an overnight hospital stay. The seeds are placed using thin needles inserted through the perineum, guided by ultrasound. They emit radiation for several weeks and continue to stay in place, causing no harm to surrounding tissues. Brachytherapy is not recommended for large or advanced tumors, but is extremely advantageous for men with smaller tumors. The procedure is less invasive, takes less time, is less costly and has fewer side effects than external radiation or surgery. More than 90 percent of patients continue to be disease-free five years after the procedure.
MRI
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, is a state-of-the-art technology that allows doctors to tailor each radiation treatment to your individual needs. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to determine the exact location of the tumor and to deliver precise radiation doses to the tumor or specific areas within the tumor.

Computed Tomography
Most testicular tumors are discovered during self-exams or physician exams. Diagnosis of testicular cancer involves a patient history to evaluate risk factors; a physical examination to check for lumps, swelling or enlarged lymph nodes; and diagnostic tests. Diagnostic tests include ultrasound, CT scan and blood tests. These tests help rule out other causes of symptoms and determine the location, size and stage of the tumor.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells. Chemotherapy can also be used for cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
Radiation Therapy
External beam radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, involves a series of daily treatments to accurately deliver radiation to the prostate. A carefully focused beam of radiation is delivered from a machine outside the body.
Radiation Oncology
CT simulation is the first step in planning your treatment. The treatment-planning sessions help the radiation oncology team accurately locate and visualize the tumor. This makes it possible to determine the optimal treatment approach and deliver it with increased accuracy and as little radiation as possible to the healthy tissue around the tumor. These treatment-planning sessions will last approximately one hour and are similar to having a CT scan.

Robotic Surgery
Da Vinci Robotic surgery uses small laparoscopic instruments that are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen to dissect and remove the cancerous prostate gland. This procedure is less painful and requires a shorter period of recovery than radical prostatectomy but achieves the same level of cancer control. The typical hospital stay is 36 hours with a recovery period of two to three weeks, compared with a 72-hour hospital stay and six- to eight-week recovery period with radical prostatectomy.Da Vinci Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that requires four or five small incisions at or below the navel. Because of the amazing clarity the da Vinci system provides, the surgeon can identify the muscles that control continence and the nerves involved with sexual function and reduce side effects such as urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
