Ultrasonic cleaning and autoclave sterilization of instruments assure a safe clinical experience. Conscious IV sedation, administered by a Board Certified Medical Anesthesiologist, is available for patients who want to sleep through the endodontic procedure. Nitrous oxide sedation is also available to allow patients to have a pleasant treatment experience.

Step 4: Once your treatment is completed, you will need a permanent restoration (usually a full crown or bonded filling) to replace the temporary filling. Your general dentist will provide this service for you and this must be done in a timely manner to prevent chipping or fracture of the treated tooth.

Root Canal Treatment
Certain Endodontic conditions do not lend themselves to standard root canal therapy and may require Endodontic surgery. If you have persistent symptoms after root canal treatment, your tooth may have a fracture or an extra canal that could not be detected during non-surgical treatment. In this case, endodontic surgery allows us to examine the entire root of your tooth, find the problem and provide treatment. Sometimes calcium deposits make a canal too narrow, and the instruments used in non-surgical root canal treatment cannot reach to the root end which prevents proper cleaning of the entire root. If this happens or your tooth canals have calcified, we may perform endodontic surgery to clean out and seal the remainder of the canal.
Apicoectomy
Usually, a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment can last the rest of your life and never need further treatment. It is very important that the tooth have a permanent restoration such as a crown to prevent the tooth from chipping or breaking. Well restored root canal treated teeth have a success rate of 90-95%. Sometimes, however, a tooth may not heal properly or it may become infected again. When inflammation or infections persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure, we may have to perform surgery. Although we can utilize several surgical procedures to save a tooth, the most common root canal surgery is called an apicoectomy, or root-end resection. We will schedule a specific consultation appointment if we recommend surgical treatment. At that visit, we will review the details of root canal surgery.

Dental Implants
When the pulp of a tooth is damaged, the only alternative to endodontic treatment is extraction of the tooth. To restore chewing function and to prevent adjacent teeth from shifting, the extracted tooth must be replaced with an implant or bridge. This requires surgery or dental procedures on adjacent healthy teeth and can be far more costly and time consuming than endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth.
