Dental Examination
Your first appointment at Mairs Family Dentistry usually will take about an hour and a half. You will get a chance to meet your doctor and receive a comprehensive oral exam. The exam will include an examination of the mouth for cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues.
Oral Cancer Screening

Teeth Cleaning
Your doctor will also do an oral cancer screening, check your blood pressure, and make necessary radiographs. After your exam one of the highly trained hygienists will provide a comprehensive dental cleaning unless you suffer from periodontal disease. Sometimes patients with periodontal disease need treatment that requires several visits. Finally we will make a plan for any treatment, if necessary, and answer all of your questions.
Fluoride Treatment
We typically recommend that children visit their dentist every 6 months. We also recommend fluoride treatments and sealants as preventive measures. Adults and Seniors: Regular dental cleaning and examination is important to the health of your teeth and gums, and to your overall health. Your dentist will recommend the appropriate frequency of visits based on your needs. Most patients visit their dentist twice a year.

Through the use of new techniques and new dental materials, our doctors can restore the teeth of even the most cosmetically minded patients without sacrificing the long term strength and stability of the mouth. He does this through the use of veneers, porcelain restorations, ceramic restorations, bonded composites, cosmetic re-contouring, and whitening procedures
Restorative Dentistry
Most procedures in a dental office that are not preventative or cosmetic are considered restorative. We pride ourselves on the fact we will stop at nothing to ensure that the work we do is not only necessary but it is done to the highest quality possible.

Root Canal Treatment
Over the years, “root canals” have gained the reputation of being a long and painful procedure. However, with advent of new technologies and medicines, that is not always the case. Often times we have the ability to complete the root canal procedure in one or two appointments with little or no discomfort. A root canal procedure is required when the nerve of the tooth is damaged, traumatized, or infected. If the tooth is restorable, We will removed the damaged or infected nerve and replace it with a substance that will seal the canals of the root system, which will prevent future infections.

Periodontal Surgery
When a periodontal pocket grows to a certain height or is not responsive to initial cleaning, not even the most stilled hygienist adequately remove all the tarter or inhibit bone distruction. In this situation, a dentist or periodontal specialist will do the cleaning by surgically moving the gums in order to to expose the root surfaces.

Dentures
Dentures replace missing natural teeth. They provide chewing function, improved speech and support for the facial muscles. Complete dentures can replace all of the teeth. Partial dentures replace some of the teeth. A conventional denture can be placed after removal of the patient’s teeth and several weeks of healing. An immediate denture can be placed immediately after the teeth are removed.

Dental Implants
At Mairs Family Dentistry we have the capability to replace missing teeth through the use of dental implants. When a patient with good bone density and over all good health loses a tooth, we are able to replace the root of that tooth with a dental implant. Once that implant heals and fully integrates into the patient’s body, we will be able to place a tooth on the dental implant.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth cracks or decays to the point that the tooth non-restorable. When a tooth cannot be saved, our doctors have the ability to remove the tooth as well as provide comfort should there be any post-surgical complications. Because of our extensive training, we rarely need to refer our patients to an oral surgeon for extractions. Thereby allowing our patients to endure a sometimes frightening procedure with a staff and dentist that they know and trust.
Tooth Extractions

Orthodontics
When we anticipate that a tooth will be too difficult for us to extract, we will refer our patients to only the most qualified Oral Surgeons that we have hand selected. We can also extract teeth that need to be removed in preparation for orthodontics or due to impactions..
Invisalign Orthodontics
Invisalign is a nearly invisable alternative to conventional braces. The invisalign system is not indicated for all patients or all types of tooth movement. Invisalign is ideal when minor orthodontic movement is desired and only a dentist or orthodontist can tell when Invisalign is appropriate.

Sara is the Registered Expanded Duties Dental Assistant at Mairs Family Dentistry Sara’s effervescent personality and compassionate chairside assisting is sure to make your dental experience a pleasant one. She has been with this practice since 2008 and a dental assistant since 1998. Sara has a strong affinity for cosmetic dentistry and enjoys helping patients attain a great smile.
General Dentistry
Dr. Mairs attended the University of Iowa where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biology and also played baseball for the Hawkeyes. After graduation, Dr. Mairs chose to stay in Iowa where he attended The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. In dental school, Dr. Mairs enjoyed all aspects of the art and science of dentistry. His hard work and dedication to patient care were rewarded by his selection to expand his dental education in Denmark, for a semester of his senior year.After graduation, Dr. Mairs proudly entered the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, Dr. Mairs was selected to to attend a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency where he graduated top of his class. Dr. Mairs completed his Air Force career at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ.
