Rheumatoid arthritis, aka “inflammatory arthritis,” is also fairly common, although it is not as easily understood. It develops as an autoimmune response, meaning that the immune system sees the joints as a threat and decides to attack them. Dr. Lori Alexander, MSPT, DPT, founder of The Physical Therapy Zone, began her career as a physical therapist working for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Alexander had moved to Rochester after graduating from Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in 1996. During her five years working for the Mayo Clinic, she specialized in inpatient and outpatient orthopedics, pediatrics and vestibular rehabilitation. In 2001, Dr. Alexander and her husband moved to his home town of Alexandria, Virginia. Since settling in Alexandria, she worked for seven years at the Virginia Hospital Center-Arlington, specializing in orthopedics. In 2008, Dr. Alexander started her own home health physical therapy private practice to provide patients with physical therapy in the comfort of their homes. During this time, she heard that many outpatient clinics were now limiting the time their therapists spent working directly with patients, with some clinics allowing a mere 10 minutes of one-on-one care during an appointment. Dr. Alexander wanted to change that so she opened her own outpatient physical therapy private practice to provide patients with more personalized care.

Frozen Shoulder
Also known as “adhesive capsulitis,” frozen shoulder can occur if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a while, or if you have been bedridden for an extended period of time. It results in a painful loss of motion in the shoulder with a tightening of the shoulder joint that severely limits motion. There are some ethnicities that are more predisposed, and women tend to have more instances than men. Frozen shoulders are more common in women in the 40-60 years of age.

Flat Feet
Your foot contains several tendons that work together to form your arch. When the tendons pull together properly, your foot will form a proper arch. However, when the tendons do not pull together properly, your foot will form a very small arch or no arch at all. This is referred to as “fallen arch” or “flat foot” and can cause pain or discomfort with time.
Heel Spurs
This is a bony protrusion on the heel that is usually made of some sort of calcium build-up. While the actual spurs are not painful they can poke the tissues in the heel and potentially cause severe pain. Many of the same risk factors that cause plantar fasciitis can also cause heel spurs.
