Pain medicine specialists are also experts in using a wide variety of medications, which can effectively alleviate pain for some patients. The pain medicine specialist will work with you and any other doctors who are treating you, such as your primary care physician, surgeon or oncologist.

Labor and Delivery
Before having anesthesia for surgery, childbirth, pain management, or any other procedure, the AANM advises patients to learn as much as they can about their anesthesia options; the do’s and don’ts before and after anesthesia; how other medications interact with anesthetic drugs; possible side effects of anesthesia, and more. By educating yourself as much as possible, you will become an informed “partner” in your own anesthesia care.

Lung Cancer
If you smoke, you probably know it can cause major health problems, from heart disease to asthma to lung cancer. Add surgery complications to the list of concerns. Smoking can increase the risk of anesthesia-related problems from surgery, such as wound infections, pneumonia and heart attacks. If you’re having surgery, physician anesthesiologists recommend you quit smoking as soon as possible before the procedure — preferably a week or more before — and for as long as possible afterward. But quitting even the day before surgery helps.

These physicians complete four years of medical school and further training in a specialty, such as anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry or neurology, followed by an additional year of training to become an expert in chronic pain. Be sure your specialist is certified in a pain medicine subspecialty by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, such as the American Board of Anesthesiology. While you may know that physician anesthesiologists manage pain before, during and after surgery, you may not realize that some specialize in managing chronic pain. In fact, decades of research by physician anesthesiologists have led to the development of more effective treatments for chronic pain.

Knee Replacement
If you’re having major surgery, such as a knee replacement or back surgery, you most likely will receive general anesthesia and be unconscious during the procedure. Very rarely, patients who have general anesthesia become aware or conscious during the procedure when the intention was for the patient to be unconscious. This is called anesthesia awareness, and it happens in only one or two out of every 1,000 medical cases involving general anesthesia in adults. Although it can be very unsettling, patients who experience awareness generally do not feel pain.
