A. Only about 30% of any of your teeth is visible above the gum. X-rays allow dentists to see the other 70% of your teeth, and also to see into the sinus, around the jaw joint, and through the lower jaw. They also allow dentists to diagnose dental infection, bone loss and developmental problems, many of which don’t hurt or otherwise let you know they are there. Today’s dental x-rays can be made with very little radiation, in fact, you would get more radiation from an hour at the beach than you would from one of our small pictures taken in the dental office.

Oral Cancer Screening
A. Dental Hygienists take two years of training in order to qualify for licensure to clean teeth, do oral cancer screening, and provide non-surgical deep gum cleaning. They can also diagnose dental conditions, and train patients in how to care for their teeth at home.

Root Canal Treatment
Dr. Zimpfer received his DDS from Indiana University after completing a Biology degree from Wabash College. Dr. Zimpfer has continued his studies in the areas of cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, oral medicine and rehabilitative dentistry. His professional affiliations include the American, Indiana and Indianapolis Dental Associations, and he has been featured on many local media affiliates.

Dentures
A. The American Dental Association recommends seeing the dentist and hygienist every six months for patients who do not have gum disease. Patients who are managing treated gum disease should see a hygienist every 3 to 4 months. Patients who have dentures should see a dentist at least once a year for oral cancer screening and evaluation/cleaning of the dentures.
