Dentures
A dental implant is a post that is surgically embedded in the jaw. For patients who have lost a single tooth, an implant can serve as an anchor, or root replacement, for a new tooth. In cases where multilple teeth are missing, implants can be used to stabilize a removable denture. In the initial stage, a dental implant is placed in the healthy jaw, which then will need to heal for 3-6 months. This ensures that the implant will hold up under the forces of chewing. After the appropriate healing period, the implant is ready to receive a post and crown. These are the components that are visible above the gum-line, what we consider to be the "functional" part of the tooth for chewing. The implant tooth then acts as any other natural tooth and should be brushed and flossed regularly.

A: To perform I.V. sedation in the State of Washington, a dentist must hold an I.V. sedation permit in addition to a dental license, which requires additional training. Dr. Smith has received extensive training in I.V. sedation during two years as an oral and maxillofacial surgery intern in Detroit, Michigan. He is also certified through the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and the staff members at Yelm Dental are CPR certified by Red Cross.

I feel very lucky to live and work in the Yelm community! Since returning to Washington in 2010, I have been practicing general dentistry at Yelm Dental. I had the privilege of working alongside my childhood dentist, Marlin Kay, until he retired in 2013. I grew up in Lacey, graduated from Timberline High School in 1998, then spent twelve years furthering my education and starting a family.
