Sclerotherapy is a treatment for both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject a special solution into the vein, causing it to collapse and to be absorbed by the body. The procedure is performed in the office setting, and causes only minimal discomfort. Different concentrations of the solution are used, depending upon the size of the vein being treated. Multiple veins may be injected at a time. The number of sessions required for treatment depends on the type and number of abnormal veins. Sclerotherapy of large veins may be facilitated by the use of ultrasound imaging.
