General Info

Grant County Veterinary Clinic is a full service small animal hospital. We offer wellness exams with vaccinations and medical examinations. We can perform a wide variety of soft tissue surgery and orthopedic surgeries. Internal Medicine cases can be worked up while you wait. Hospitalization can be provided if patients are sick. We have a new Radiology Room. Our hospital also performs many dental procedures.

Comprehensive Examination
Today's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at Grant County Veterinary Clinic, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that a fever or other illness won't be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout on anesthesia explains this in greater detail.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Trio is the first chewable tablet available to combine heartworm prevention with both flea and tick prevention, plus intestinal deworming against hookworms and roundworms. Heartworm testing is required.
Pain Management
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.

Dr. Twehues, Jr. graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1998 with a Bachelors Degree in animal science. He then attended Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2002. He worked for six years at a very large, progressive small animal hospital (Woodford Veterinary Clinic) in Versailles, Kentucky. In July of 2007 he joined Grant County Veterinary Clinic. He enjoys orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. His wife's name is Stephanie, and he has two daughters, Maggie Grace and Allie Anne, and a son named Charlie. He is an active member of Ducks Unlimited.
Laser Surgery
Spaying and Neutering
Spaying or neutering should be performed at 4-6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. A pre-anesthetic blood screen is recommended prior to undergoing anesthesia and surgery.

Laboratory Services
We offer three levels of in-house blood testing before surgery, which we will go over with you when you bring your pet in. Our doctors prefer the more comprehensive screen, because it gives them the most information to ensure the safety of your pet. For geriatric or ill pets, additional blood tests, electrocardiograms, or x-rays may be required before surgery as well.
