[This review is for the White Settlement branch of Megabytes PC Repair--not the Watauga branch, but it is the same company.]

I selected this company based on glowing reviews. I chose to ignore the negative reviews, and paid dearly for it. IMHO, I now perceive the glowing reviews as astroturfing by the company and/or employees. My problem: A five year old Sony Vaio laptop would have the display occasionally go completely black. Everything else would work fine (i.e., using an external monitor was fine), but the laptop display would just go dark during use. The behavior appeared as if the 'lid close switch' was being activated while the lid wasn't closed.

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE:

They charged me $260 to completely destroy my laptop--it is now a frisbee. A full review is available on Angie's List, as this site has review character limitations, and does not support pictures.

I selected this company based on the glowing reviews here. I chose to ignore the negative reviews, and paid dearly for it. IMHO, the glowing reviews should largely be ignored, as I now perceive them as astroturfing by the company and/or employees.

My problem:

A five year old Sony Vaio laptop would have the display occasionally go completely black. Everything else would work fine (i.e., using an external monitor was fine), but the laptop display would just go dark during use. The behavior appeared as if the 'lid close switch' was being activated while the lid wasn't closed.

Summary of the experience:

* The returned laptop is a completely dead brick, and "no longer repairable" (their words/assessment).

All of the damage was caused by these people, as the laptop only had a minor problem when I took it in.

* The laptop was scavenged for spare parts during its stay, and they even tried to continue the scavenge as they were returning it

* Overall, $260 was spent in 'repair' costs.

* Nine-months elapsed for 'repairs'.

* I feel I was sold a hard drive that was not needed.

* During this experience, the company had a very difficult time answering the phone. When I got in touch with someone, and they said they'd call right back, they never did. This happened dozens of times during my laptop's nine month stay at this company.

* Out about $80 in gasoline plus the lost time for the nine or so trips I made to the shop when they told me "it was ready" when it wasn't.

I've included a full review including the timeline involved on Angie's List, as they allow uploading pictures taken of the unbelievable destruction these people did to my laptop.

I will never do business with this company again. This company goes by two names "Express PC Repair" and "Megabytes PC Repair". It is the same company, so be wary of both names.

Please learn from my mistake, and take heed of the negative reviews listed here.

Took my HDD in for a data reco...

Took my HDD in for a data recovery. I have a hard time reconciling the positive reviews with my experience. Are we talking about the same place? Are these family friends giving positive reviews to help build repoire? Pros: They apparently tried hence the 2 stars Neutral: Unsuccessful but sometime that is outside of ones realm of control. Cons: +Main complaint is the lack of professionalism. 1)Three different occasions they did not adhere to their store hours. On one occasion, on the phone earlier that day, I said I was going to pick up the unit after work. They closed an hourly early. They didn't even let me know. My dialogue with Debbie the next day was as follows.. Me: You closed early yesterday. Debbie: Yep Me: I called earlier and said I was going to come in after work. No one told me. Debbie: <says nothing> Me: It was actually an inconvenience Debbie: Is that it? On another occasion she told me that my data had been retrieved and they just needed to transfer it to an external drive. I could come by the next morning at 10am. Next day at 10 am. They were not open. I came by later only to discover they had not actually checked the recovered data. None of it was readable. +Generally felt the need to walk on egg shells. Received atitude when asking general questions. + I was still charged $30 even though they recovered ZERO data. Most places will only charge if they recover something. Granted they did spend time trying but that is the nature of the business and their competition. My recommendation is to choose any of their 100 competitors. They are clearly not interested in retaining existing or making new customers. Another place might actually be able to recover your data too! If not, they wont charge you. I am not sure who was more welcoming, the staff or the barking chihuahua when you come in the store (true story). However, if you are looking an experience reminiscent of a conversation with a middle school teenager...or if standing by the quality of ones work is not important to you, then I can recommend Megabytes. I welcome, or even challenge, Megabytes to refute any of the above

Customer dropped the system off after 2:00pm on friday. We started running memtest on it and finished running Drive fitness test on it saturday. She is right that that the technician had an onsite call at 1:00 PM and had to go on it. He came back and finished the hard drive diagnostics. I called her about 4:30 and let her know that she had one bad stick of ram and we would finish looking at the software on monday and would call her before 12:00 PM. Apparently she wasn't satisfied with that. lets take a look at this. We had it from 2:00PM to 6:00PM and then 10:00AM to 5:00PM on saturday in which by then we had diagnosed her computer and let her know it would be finished by 12:00 monday. In fact she left this review before she even received her computer back. The total response time on diagnostics and repair would have been less than 48 business hours. This lady was very unreasonable.

Laptop not charging

My son tripped on my charger cord and ripped the charging port out of the laptop. I took my laptop in to have it replaced. They carried the necessary parts in stock and had the work completed in 2 days. Great price and nice looking store.

Cracked screen on my laptop

Brought my laptop in to have the screen replaced. I was given a prompt estimate and a fair price. Highly recommended. Very professional and seemed knowledgeable.

Megabytes PC Repair Highly Recommended

I stopped by Megabytes PC Repair to have my laptop fixed because it wouldn't hold a charge. They had it fixed quickly. Next time I have anything that needs to be fixed I am most definitely going back. I'm going to recommend everybody I know.
