Dental Examination

X-rays
Digital x-rays are the newest technology used in dentistry to take and archive dental x-rays. Digital x-rays significantly reduces the amount of radiation as compared to traditional dental x-rays.This technique captures a digital picture of teeth with their supporting bone structures and stores the images on a computer in our Vernon Hills Dental Office. You and Dr. Spilotro will be able to instantly view your x-rays and enlarge the image to aid in the identification of dental problems and to guage your dental health. Dr. Spilotro will use this information to create an individualized treatment plan.
Oral Cancer Screening
Your oral health is an indication of your overall health, so just because a problem in your mouth seems harmless does not mean that it should be overlooked. Dr. Spilotro will examine your mouth to screen for signs oral cancer, since the disease often starts out painless. At the very least, an oral cancer screening can help prevent infections of the mouth before they ever cause you pain or discomfort. Your neck will be examined to check for any hardened lymph nodes. Your cheeks, roof of the mouth, tongue and floor of the mouth will all be examined to check for any areas that look unusual. If something is found, it is not necessarily cancer. You will be referred to an oral surgeon to have the area evaluated and possibly biopsied.

Teeth Cleaning
The early stages of gum disease are classified as gingivitis, and if caught early on, the effects of the disease can be reversed. Once the gums and bone begin to deteriorate, the damage is permanent and can only be managed, not cured, with professional treatment. Daily brushing and flossing can help prevent the onset of periodontal disease, but regular oral exams and cleanings are necessary to ensure that all plaque and tartar are removed from the teeth and that the signs of gum disease are caught before the damage is irreversible. Many patients do not experience any symptoms of periodontal disease until it’s too late, which is why it’s important to schedule an evaluation today to learn more!
Fluoride Treatment
In addition to hygiene treatment and maintenance during your regular oral examinations, Dr. Spilotro offers fluoride treatment to help inhibit tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral naturally found in water and other foods; it makes teeth more resistant to acid from oral bacteria and sugars. It can also reverse the effect of early tooth decay. Your dentist can prescribe fluoride supplements, or apply it directly to the teeth in the form of a varnish. Fluoride treatment may be necessary for people who suffer from chronic dry mouth, the early stages of gum disease, or a history of frequent cavities.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a preventative procedure used to protect permanent molars just after they have fully erupted (around ages 6 and 12). The sealant procedure involves brushing a tooth-colored material into the deep grooves and pits of your child’s back teeth, creating an environment that helps repel tooth decay and is easier to keep clean.
