Ophthalmologists

Glaucoma
Although glaucoma cannot usually be cured, it can be controlled. The Eye Institute’s team of highly trained ophthalmologists, including a glaucoma specialist with advanced training, is successfully treating glaucoma with the latest techniques. Medications in the forms of eye drops and pills, as well as laser treatment and advanced surgical procedures, are proven to be effective treatments against glaucoma.
Ophthalmology
A board-certified ophthalmologist is one who has received a certificate from the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), which is the oldest medical specialty board in the United States. It has been providing certificates to qualified ophthalmologists since 1916. Those certificates are the only ophthalmology certificates recognized by both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK surgery is a procedure that utilizes a laser to reshape the cornea (the windshield to the eye) to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is important for patients to understand that no eye surgical procedure is risk-free. Over 30 years of experience however, have indicated a high level of both safety and efficacy associated with both LASIK and PRK.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding or opacification of the lens of the eye. The lens is located directly behind the pupil and is mandatory for the correct focusing of images onto the retina. As the lens becomes cloudy, vision diminishes and there is often a progressive decrease in one’s ability to see things clearly.
Cataract Surgery
As cataracts develop it is often possible to change one’s glasses prescription to reacquire clear vision but eventually if the cataract becomes dense enough, it is not possible to correct by changing the prescription. Cataract surgery may become the only way to re-establish clear vision. Certain diseases such as diabetes are associated with an increased incidence of cataracts.
Eye Exam

Internal Medicine
Dr. Peters, a native of Tulsa, received his undergraduate degree from The University of Kansas in Lawrence. He received his Medical Degree from The University of Oklahoma’s School of Medicine where he graduated with the merit of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for academic excellence. Dr. Peters completed his Internal Medicine Internship at The University of Oklahoma’s School of Medicine, followed by a three year residency program in ophthalmology at The Dean McGee Eye Institute. Upon completion of his residency program, Dr. Peters was invited to continue with The Dean McGee Eye Institute as an Associate Clinical Professor. In 2002, Dr. Peters returned home to Tulsa to join The Eye Institute as a comprehensive, general ophthalmologist. Dr. Peters is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, Dr. Peters is presently an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Oklahoma’s School of Medicine, and is involved in teaching medical students and resident physicians.

Dr. Balyeat attended Duke University as an undergraduate majoring in chemistry and graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. His internship combined rotations in internal medicine, neurology and general surgery. After completion of an ophthalmology residence at OU’s Dean A. McGee Eye Institute, Dr. Balyeat completed a retinal surgical fellowship under the guidance of William S. Hagler, MD and William H. Jarrett, MD at the Atlanta Ophthalmology Consultants, Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA.
