In addition to his work as a Nutritionist, Jeff is a licensed massage therapist, specializing in deep tissue manipulation known as Myofascial Release, a gentle form of bodywork that evolved out of Rolfing. Deep Tissue Massage

Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Dr. Downs has extensive experience in treating sports/trauma related knee pain as well as arthritic related knee pain. Many elderly patients who are not well suited for a knee replacement, will often seek help in an effort to manage their condition on a more conservative level and to try to avoid knee replacement. Various mobilization and rehabilitative techniques can sometimes reduce pain and improve function, and acupuncture techniques have also proven to be useful for the management of knee pain. Through palpation and other means of assessment including orthopedic testing, it can often be determined whether a condition is related to cartilage damage, internal derangement of the knee, or ligament abnormalities, all of which may require different approaches of therapeutic intervention. Physiotherapy modalities such as electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound are often utilized in addressing knee problems.

Stretching
Manipulation Therapy
The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as soft-tissue instrument-assisted mobilization. It is one of a number of manual therapy approaches that uses instruments with a specialized form of massage/scraping the skin gently.
Spinal Decompression
Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain.
Myofascial Therapy
Myofascial Release work is designed to free up the knotted tissue and restore a greater range of motion to the area. When the tissue is freed up by a gentle application of deep pressure to loosen the layers of tissue between muscles, muscle fibers and tendons--pain is released. Appointments are designed to loosen the tissue that stops muscles from operating as they were intended. Often, because of physical or psychological injury, we try to protect the damaged area by using other muscles to do the job. If we do that a lot, over time, the whole body falls out of alignment.

Flexion Distraction Therapy
Disc herniations are one of the most common sources of low back and sciatic type pain. A disc herniation is a byproduct of injury or general wear and tear of the disc whereby the disc can protrude and trap surrounding nerve structures causing a “pinched nerve” type syndrome. Sciatica is often a byproduct of a disc herniation pressing against a nerve root. Disc herniations can run a large gamut from the mild to the severe, and in some cases may even require surgery. Dr. Downs has extensive experience in treating disc herniations and diagnosing their severity both with imaging such as MRI and with neurological assessment to determine how much the nerve may be impaired from a disc problem. The goal is, of course, to provide the patient with maximal improvement and a speedy recovery through chiropractic conservative techniques. In addition, by discussing the severity of disc problem and their manifestations upon your health, all other options of treatment will be reviewed so decisions can be made with regard to your personal circumstances. Segmental traction in the form of Cox Technique/Flexion Distraction is greatly utilized in the management of this type of condition, and we have pelvic traction in the form of an Anatomotor table that can provide long axis traction which has proven to be very useful in handling these types of conditions.

Finally, we embrace a holistic concept of wellness whereby supplementary services such as massage therapy, acupuncture, nutrition, dry needling, and exercise protocols are all readily available to optimize clinical results.
