Rheumatoid arthritis, also called RA, is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many joints, including those in the hand. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue, affecting joint linings and causing painful swelling. Over time, the inflammation can cause bone erosion and joint deformity.
Plantar Fasciitis
One of the most common causes of heel pain, Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot connecting your heel bone to your toes.
Cryotherapy
Plantar warts are often mistaken for hyperkeratotic tissue (a thickening of the outer layer of the skin). Your podiatrist can diagnose by noting disruption in friction ridges, pain when applying pressure to either side of the lesion, and pinpoint bleeding upon debridement. In some cases, a plantar wart can resolve on its own. In other cases, if left untreated could linger for years. Acid-based treatment, cryotherapy, and excision are the most common treatments.

Neurology
The Florida Orthopaedic Institute Division of Chiropractic Medicine includes a unique approach to the functional application of both neurology and orthopedics. Chiropractors are medical professionals who diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, specializing in noninvasive (nonsurgical) pain management and restoration of skeletal function by utilizing manual medicine and chiropractic techniques. Additionally, they give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects of the body, including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, and nutritional relationships. Chiropractors elect not to prescribe medications and do not perform surgery; however, they do work very closely with the other Florida Orthopaedic Institute physicians and refer patients to their colleagues at Florida Orthopaedic Institute for other services when needed.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling, weakness and other symptoms in the hand and arm because of pressure on the median nerve in your wrist.
Multiple Sclerosis
Through new advanced therapies, patients can take advantage of their own ability to heal by using healthy cells found naturally throughout the body. Laboratory and clinical research suggest that it is possible to use these cells to restore and repair damaged or aging cells and effectively regenerate tissue. These therapies have shown promise in orthopedic medicine, burn treatment, nerve restoration and treatment of heart conditions, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and other diseases.

Pressure can come from swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller such as health problems (hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes), repetitive hand or wrist motions and pregnancy.

Ultrasound
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is an imaging test allowing physicians to visualize internal structures of the body for disease or abnormal conditions. MRI does not use radiation for imaging, like an x-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan. Instead, MRI examinations use specialized equipment with a powerful, constant magnetic field, rapidly changing local magnetic fields, radiofrequency energy, and dedicated equipment including a powerful computer to create clear pictures of internal body structures. Often an MRI gives different information about structures in the body than are seen with an X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan.

The NAVIO® Surgery System allows Florida Orthopaedic surgeons to perform precise and accurate partial knee replacements. This system, developed by medical device maker Smith & Nephew, involves only a simple x-ray rather than a time-consuming and radiation-intensive CT scan, before the surgeon uses advanced planning software to tailor the surgery to the patient’s anatomy, align the implant, and balance the knee.

Sciatica
Sciatica describes symptoms of pain, numbness, or weakness that spread from the sciatic nerve down the lower back to the buttocks and leg. Medically sciatica is termed lumbar radiculopathy. Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying condition, not a diagnosis.

The spine specialists at Florida Orthopaedic Institute understand how living with chronic spine pain can chronically impact your daily life. If you experience lower back pain symptoms for over a month that have not responded to more conservative measures (physical therapy, massage or anti-inflammatory medications) and find yourself growing less and less able to participate in rehabilitation efforts, consider a consultation for spine intervention with our specialists. Spine intervention consists of a wide range of treatments for the neck, lower and mid-back conditions. As an outpatient, a non-surgical procedure is performed, focused on diagnosing your condition, and then preventing and treating it. A comprehensive variety of diagnostic and therapeutic injections, when indicated, are a part of your treatment program.
Occupational Therapy
Florida Orthopaedic Institute provides in house physical and occupational therapy services for the rehabilitation needs of our patients. The very nature of our orthopedic practice often involves integrating patient care with physical or occupational therapists after seeing one of our physicians. Our goal is to offer immediate access to our therapy centers and to initiate treatment within 24-48 hours of the physician’s referral. This permits seamless care while allowing us to monitor the quality of your care.

Our physicians also assist patients with work-related injuries, pain management, rehabilitation, evaluation and prescription for therapeutic exercise, orthotics and prosthetics. We also offer interventional pain management via spine, joint and soft tissue injections.

Podiatry (or podiatric medicine) is the study, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and parts of the leg.
Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis, also called tendinitis of the heel, is an injury of the Achilles tendon which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It is a common injury with more that 200,000 US cases every year. It is spelled as both tendonitis and tendinitis.
Ankle Instability
Not all ankle fractures require surgery. It’s important to get the appropriate surgery by a skilled foot and ankle specialist when they do. Poorly executed or inappropriate surgeries can cause ankle instability, arthritis, require additional corrective surgeries, or even the need for an ankle replacement operation.

Foot and Ankle Ability Measure is a 21-question form that asks you about different activities that are affected by your foot or ankle injury/disease. While most of the other PROMs are less than ten questions, why are 21 needed to assess the foot/ankle? The foot and ankle contain a large number of bones (19 in the foot, 7 in the ankle) that all have to work in harmony to give you normal motion. This means that your foot and ankle can be injured in a lot of different ways.

Tinea pedis is a foot infection caused by a dermatophyte fungus. It is particularly prevalent in hot, tropical, urban environments. It is the most common dermatophyte (a pathogenic fungus that grows on the skin).

Metatarsalgia
Symptoms of metatarsalgia can include sharp, aching or burning pain in the ball of your foot, pain that worsens when you stand, run, flex your feet or walk, sharp or shooting pain, numbness, or tingling in your toes or the feeling of having a pebble in your shoe.
Foot Orthotics
Malalignment of the foot during the gait cycle in patients whose foot rolls inward as they move (over pronation) or over supination (when the foot rolls outwardly when lifted off the ground to take a step) can affect the knee, hip, and lower back. Overpronation of the foot can cause the leg to rotate internally. This causes increased stress to the medial collateral ligaments of the knee and increased pain to the hip. Proper foot orthotics and education on appropriate footwear can reduce this pain.
Plantar Fasciitis
People with Plantar Fasciitis commonly get a stabbing pain with their first steps in the morning. As they get up and move, the pain normally decreases, sometimes returning after long periods of standing or sitting.
Podiatric Deformities
If you participate in activities that involve running and jumping, you can get a condition in which the ball of your foot becomes painful and inflamed. This is called metatarsalgia. It is also caused by foot deformities and shoes that are ill-fitting.
