Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment

Preventive Care

Vaccination
An injection of I-131 is given subcutaneously (under the skin) over the shoulders, just like a vaccination could be. The I-131 travels through the blood stream into the thyroid cells wherever they are (usually in the neck, but sometimes the chest). Other types of cells in the body absorb little to no iodine or radioiodine, which is why cats do not feel sick after they receive their treatment.
Behavioral Counseling
High thyroid hormones cause an increased metabolism, leading to weight loss. Cats, carnivores, burn protein more readily than fat for energy, seen as muscle wasting over the spine, hips and back legs, sometimes despite a chubby tummy. Some cats have more difficulty jumping up onto furniture due to muscle weakness. Most cats try to compensate by eating more ( polyphagia.) Some cats are so ravenous, they steal food off the kitchen counters or the owners’ plates! Other cats may become pickier, even though they may act hungrier. While the weight loss may happen quickly, it may also be so gradual that some owners may not even realize it has occurred. Many hyperthyroid cats have increased urination, and need to drink more water to catch up to their fluid losses. Hyperthyroidism usually leads to behavior changes, which may include agitation, anxiety, and even aggression toward animals (including human companions.) Owners frequently describe their cats “jetting up and down the halls”, or as “more playful” or “ clingy.” The agitation makes some cats “talk more.” These become more vocal, and may restlessly ‘haunt the house’ caterwauling. Some hyperventilate (pant), especially if stressed, e.g., in the car or veterinary office. Most have high heart rates, even when in a relaxed environment. Vomiting and diarrhea may be caused, or at least worsened, by thyroid disease, even if caused by a different (non-thyroidal) problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Some cats groom excessively when they’re anxious from hormonal duress, licking or snatching tufts of fur out, leaving bald or ‘moth-eaten’ areas. Some groom less, allowing flake and oil to build up in their coats, making them look ‘scruffy.’
Nutritional Counseling
Will & Grace found me in 1999 when they were four weeks old. They were born near in a parking lot off Highway 99. They are twins and do everything together. This year they celebrated their 15th birthdays and are thriving in excellent health due to the Feline Hyperthyroid Center for treatment. They both did amazingly well with treatment and continue to live happy lives to torment and love each other. A third family member, Hunter, also had the Hyperthyroid treatment and she thrives at the ripe old age of 13. All three showed remarkable progress immediately: namely, weight gain, and their fur went back to a healthy looking coat....appetites never waivered. It was costly, one treatment was right after I lost a job, but I will tell you it was worth it.
Comprehensive Examination
The consultation with Dr. Vaughan and the I-131 will be done the SAME DAY to reduce car trips for your cat. However, if you prefer to schedule the consultation only, we are happy to accommodate that request. Appointments are offered on Mondays and Thursdays in Shoreline, and in Tacoma on Tuesdays. Our physical exam and review of your cats' medical records help determine whether your cat is a good candidate for I-131 treatment, and if so, what dose will be best. A family member or someone that lives with the cat needs to be present during the consultation.

Thyroid Disease Treatment
The best diet for your hyperthyroid cat satisfies his/her nutritional requirements as an aging carnivore recovering from a muscle-wasting disease, and avoids chemicals that may contribute to thyroid disease. We encourage you to read cat food labels and consider these guidelines.
Heart Disease Treatment
Over the years, elevated thyroid hormones cause heart disease. Unfortunately, controlling the hormone production with methimazole does not fully protect the heart.
Kidney Disease Treatment
If your cat has significant kidney failure, advanced heart failure, or a malignant cancer, we can resolve the hyperthyroidism, but may be unable to make your cat better by treating the hyperthyroidism alone. You may not want to treat your cat due to the poor prognosis of the other disease processes, but we allow you to discuss this decision with your regular veterinarian prior to making any final decisions.

Laboratory Services
We recommend your senior cat have a check up semi-annually once they turn 10. Every 6 months, schedule an exam, blood work, and a urinalysis with your veterinarian. The goal is to catch medical issues BEFORE you note symptoms. You will often have a much better outcome when a medical issue is caught and treated in the early stages.
