For years I have given all my personal injury clients a simple speech, which ends with the statement that on the back of every lawyer's card, printed in invisible ink, are the words "Shut Up". This is even more true with respect to criminal matters.
DUI/DWI
DUI. In many courts, your incarceration may be put on hold, with a status conference every month or two to discuss whether it is safe for you to serve your sentence. As of this writing, you can still go and serve your day or two or three at the County jail, but the situation changes with the severity of the disease at the time.

The judge, who as a prosecutor was known for his tough stance on white collar crime, and who had been widely publicized for his willingness to take on The Mob -- was removed from office some years later and subsequently imprisoned for tax fraud after embezzling from his business partners.

The attorney for one of the senior defendants spent a lot of time trying to discredit the state police officer who identified his client from the recordings(the state had undercover witnesses who wore wires and had bugged the defendants' meeting place). "You identify my client from the words he spoke, so what words were they and why do you say they were spoken by my client?" This puzzling tack became clear when the recordings were played and most of the people in the courtroom were rolling on the floor. The defendant had a very distinctive, very deep voice -- he was a real life Rocky! Later in the trial, we heard that the attorney himself was under indictment on drug charges.
Murder
Then I heard the news -- I was on "The Great Mafia Trial"(Jersey, right?). The trial ran for three months, with the jury sequestered in a hotel for the final three weeks or so(after a jury tampering incident). There were four defendants -- the Capo, two senior made men and one younger wiseguy. One of the senior made men was being tried for murder(an intra-mob hit). The younger guy had thirty or so charges pending. In this environment the most striking aspect was that with the millions of dollars that had been spent, only one of the eight attorneys involved turned out to be much of a lawyer.

Property Damage
The next day, or later the same day if you are able, you want to call your insurance company and start the property damage claim. If your vehicle is safe to drive, you want to go to a quality independent body shop for an estimate. You want an independent estimate because the estimates from the insurance companies tend to underestimate the damage. Wills
This is what you get: A Last Will and Testament, customized to your instruction, printed on superheavyweight 100% cotton with a cotton envelope and a watermarked copy for your records... Plus, all the advance directives you may need: A Durable Healthcare Power of Attorney with Living Will, a Mental Healthcare Power of Attorney and a Prehospital Medical Care Directive – also known as a Do Not Resuscitate or DNR order. You also get a General Financial Power of Attorney, to use right away or in the event you become disabled.
Trusts
A Trust can be viewed as a cross between an artificial person and a company, with another person, the Trustee, running things. Many families whose needs are simple enough for just a Will set up a Living Trust, with names like the “John Doe Living Trust” or “The Smith Family Trust”.
Power of Attorney
The Healthcare Power of Attorney identifies the person ("Agent") you trust to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated – that is, either unable to make your own healthcare decisions, or unable to communicate your decisions to others. It communicates the decisions you make as to what powers you do and do not grant your agent, your preferences regarding an autopsy, organ and tissue donation and final disposition of your body.
Probate

Bankruptcy
Under the CBRA, there will no longer be a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy for individuals. Instead, everyone will start out the same way, in a new "Chapter 10." At first, the Chapter 10 will resemble the current Chapter 13, with similar paperwork that is more complicated than what current Chapter 7 debtors face. Then, depending on how things look, the bankruptcy will continue like a Chapter 13, with a repayment plan and longer path to completion, or it will take a quicker path that resembles Chapter 7. The only real effect at this point for most debtors is that their bankruptcy will cost more and take longer. Currently debtors have to take two small courses as part of their bankruptcies. These courses are of debateable benefit and will be going away. There is also a provision to schedule debtor hearings at a time most convenient to their work schedules. This sounds good, but the resulting chaos if this is implemented make it unlikely that it will come to pass.
Foreclosure
Not rush into filing their bankruptcy cases, unless they had imminent foreclosures, repossessions, evictions or garnishments -- but now there may be a reason to file quickly -- before a creditor can record its judgment against your home. Anything done in a rush can become messy, problematic and expensive, and that may become the case here. The full text of the law can be found here.
