Dental Examination
Dental x-rays are essential and preventative diagnostic tools that provide valuable information that may not be visible during a routine dental exam. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected. We recommend necessary x-rays based upon the review of your medical and dental history, a dental exam, signs and symptoms, your age, and your risk of periodontal disease.
X-rays
Digital radiography is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged.
Oral Cancer Screening
During bi-annual check-ups, the dentist and hygienist will thoroughly look for changes and lesions in the mouth, but a dedicated comprehensive oral cancer screening should be performed at least once each year.

Teeth Cleaning
If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis (the mildest form of gum disease) and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings.

Veneers
Yes, there may be a way to enhance your smile. It’s a good idea to discuss your options with Dr. Johnson first. He can explain the best way to create the smile you want, as well as answer any questions that you may have. For example, one procedure that can remove excess gum tissue is called crown lengthening. After the excess gum tissue is removed, the gumline is then reshaped in order to create the right proportion between gum tissue and tooth surface. Your general dentist and Dr. Johnson may also work together to coordinate additional treatments such as veneers or crowns.
Crowns
Crown lengthening is usually performed to correct a “gummy” smile, or to expose more of the tooth prior to a restorative surgery. In some cases, the teeth look short and stubby and partly covered by gum tissue due to genetics or gingivitis. Excess gum tissue can easily be removed to reshape the outline of the gums, expose the natural tooth length, and provide a fuller, more attractive smile.

Periodontal Surgery
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean.
