Dental Examination
The hygiene team specializes in preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services using state-of-the-art technologies. Diagnostic tools include digital radiography and intra-oral digital cameras that magnify your teeth and show full color computer images for patient review. Comprehensive periodontal screenings and evaluations are also a part of each regular dental visit.
X-rays
The physical process for digital radiography is actually similar to traditional dental X-rays that use film: With digital radiography, a sensor is used instead of photo film. The sensor is placed into your mouth to capture images of your teeth. Although it resembles the film used for bitewings and other X-rays, the digital sensor is electronic and connected to a computer. Once the X-ray is taken, the image is projected on a computer screen for viewing. Digital X-rays use up to 90 percent less radiation than standard film X-rays. The small size of traditional X-rays can make viewing difficult, but digital radiography once on the screen, can be enlarged or magnified for a better visual of the tooth’s structure. Brightness, contrast and color can also be adjusted, allowing your dentist to see small cavities easier. If you need a hard copy of your X-ray, digital images can easily be printed out or emailed to other medical offices that may need access to them. Digital dental X-rays are also better for the environment! With digital radiography, no chemicals are used to develop film, and no lead foil waste is created.
Oral Cancer Screening
The first visit for a new adult patient involves a comprehensive oral health evaluation. The emphasis of this appointment is the determination of future dental needs, the creation of a treatment plan when indicated, and an assessment of the patient’s periodontal health. Past dental history, expectations, and desired dental outcomes are all reviewed. Digital X-rays are taken, gum pocketing depths are recorded, and an oral cancer-screening exam is completed as well as a thorough examination of the entire dentition and the oral cavity. We use an intra-oral camera during each new client exam – thereby offering a unique “tour” of the mouth. From these various diagnostic modalities, a treatment plan is formulated. From there a new patient is moved into a hygiene chair, and a comprehensive dental cleaning is performed.

Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
Sealants are a thin, protective coating that adheres to the chewing surface of your molars. They are designed to fill in the cracks and crevices in your back teeth that may be hard to clean with regular brushing. Once applied they can keep cavities from forming and may even stop early stages of decay from becoming a full-blown cavity. Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars!

Fillings
Resin Composite
Dental fillings is one of the most common procedures done here in our practice. When a tooth becomes decayed it is necessary to restore the tooth to a healthy state before the nerve becomes damaged. Unrestored teeth can lead to sensitivity, pain, endodontic (root canal) treatment, or even tooth loss. Most of our dental fillings are done with local anesthetic to numb the area, creating a more comfortable experience for our patients. Dental fillings can be made of several different types of materials. The decayed part of the tooth is removed with a drill or a laser, then the healthy portion of the tooth is cleaned and prepped, enabling the filling material to bond to the tooth. We prefer to place Mercury-Free restorations made of a composite resin. These composites are tooth colored and blend in beautifully with your existing teeth creating a beautiful, strong, healthy smile.
Veneers
Dental veneers are thin shells of engineered porcelain. They are adhered to the front surfaces of teeth for cosmetic enhancement. Custom designed for each patient, veneers are made from material that looks and feels like a natural tooth. Dentists can use veneers for a number of cosmetic corrections, ranging from teeth whitening to improving orthodontic appearance. Their lifelike appearance and wide array of functions, makes veneers an excellent and reliable choice for cosmetic improvement.
Crowns
Crown Lengthening is a procedure performed to give a crown more retention. In some cases, there is not enough tooth structure left to support a crown needed for a tooth. In order to provide more retention, more surface area must be acquired. By trimming away some gum tissue and some bone surrounding the tooth we can in essence expose more of the tooth above the gumline to attach a crown. This is a very common procedure that only requires one visit. The healing process takes about two to three months, at which point you can return to the office to have the crown placed
Bridges
Another option for replacing a missing tooth is a bridge. A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. The dental bridge uses an artificial tooth to replace the missing tooth/teeth. These artificial teeth are called pontics. The pontics are joined permanently to crowns that cover the two adjacent teeth on both sides of the gap. The two crowns and the fake teeth all joined together make up the bridge. A bridge will span the full area where teeth are missing. A bridge is bonded into place permanently and is not removable like a denture or partial.
Dental Bonding
Tooth bonding is the application of a tooth-colored resin material using dental adhesives and a high intensity curing light. The procedure gets its name because materials are bonded to the tooth. Most often bonding is used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of a discolored or chipped tooth. Composite resin can also be used to fill gaps, conceal imperfections, and lengthen or reshape teeth. Dental bonding can generally be done within a single visit as no lab work is necessary. It is often more cost effective than veneers, however esthetics and longevity is often inferior.
Restorative Dentistry
Jitka has been practicing since graduating from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2004. For the first ten years of her career she worked in private practices in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, focusing on oral sedation, cosmetic and restorative dentistry. In 2014 Jitka escaped the big city, and moved to Vermont, where she is truly enjoying serving the diverse clientele that makes up the extended family of Stowe Family Dentistry. Jitka has always been known for her gentle chairside manners, soft touch and attention to detail. As every patient is unique and has different needs, Jitka always takes the time to listen and ask questions in order to understand what each patient wants to achieve. She is currently a member of the American Dental Association and the Vermont State Dental Association. On her days off, you’ll find Jitka out and about—spending time with friends and family paddle boarding, hiking up challenging trails, and seeking out fresh powder in backcountry glades.

Root Canal Treatment
Here at Stowe Family Dentistry we have the latest technology to help us create custom crowns in a same day visit. Our CEREC units, which utilize “CAD-CAM” technology, allow for completion of a new tooth colored crown in just a couple of hours and have transformed the way crowns are done. No need for temporary crowns or several visits to the office while an outside lab processes your order. Similar to a filling, we use local anesthetic to numb the area and prep the tooth for a crown to fit over the tooth. People often refer to them as “caps”. After they are custom created they leave no unsightly gaps or discolorations at the gum line. They appear as a natural tooth. Teeth that have had very large fillings in the past can greatly benefit from the protection of a crown, as well as teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy. In both cases the tooth has a weakened core and has a greater risk for fracturing. Crowns are an excellent way to protect a tooth, add strength and stability, and improve cosmetics.

Deep Cleaning
Often times patients develop areas where a deeper type of cleaning is needed. Scaling and root planning is a technique used to reach deeper under the gums to remove stubborn plaque, tarter, and calculus build-up. “Pocketing” is a term used when the area between the tooth and gum breaks down forming deeper areas where floss cannot reach; additionally known as periodontitis. When this happens bacteria and food particles stay beneath the gumline and start to deteriorate the bone. This can eventually cause the tooth to become loose or possibly lead to extraction in very late stages. Patients who are prone to periodontal disease or haven’t been seen for regular dental cleaning may need to have this procedure performed to clean up or maintain any areas that have worsened.

Dentures
Dental implants are an excellent option for tooth replacement. In addition to restoring function and esthetics, they also have the practical benefit of maintaining bone in the area of the lost tooth, preserving facial structure and appearance. Implants are also multi-functional; they can be used to support single teeth or longer span bridges, as well as act like anchors to help retain removable dentures and partials.

Dental Implants
A dental cone beam (CB) CT scanner uses x-rays and computer software to produce 3D cross-sectional images of the jaws and teeth. It is a smaller, faster and safer version of the regular CT scanner. Through the use of a cone shaped x-ray beam, the radiation dosage is lower, and the time needed for scanning is reduced. The scan will give us detailed information which cannot be obtained from normal x-ray examinations. For example, if you are being considered for dental implants or other special procedures, it enables us to assess the exact shape of the bone. With this information we are better able to fit our patients with the best sized implant for their bone measurements.

Oral Surgery
As the Office Manager for Stowe Family Dentistry, it is my job to oversee the daily administrative functions and ensure that our practice is running smoothly. I am committed to making every patient’s experience positive and comfortable. As a Champlain College graduate, I started out my dental career over 25 years ago as a Certified Dental Assistant. Since then I have gained valuable experience in various dental specialties including Oral Surgery and Periodontics. Along the way I gained an interest in the business and HR practices specific to dental offices. My goal is to incorporate the clinical knowledge I have gained with good office management strategies, to equip and support our dental team. When the administrative functions of our practice are effective and efficient, our practitioners can focus on our patients and their clinical needs.
Gum Surgery
CO2 Laser – the laser is used for various soft tissue surgeries, such as gum surgery. The use of the laser ensures little discomfort and very rapid healing.
Tooth Extractions
Bone grafting, or socket preservation as it’s also known, is a way to maintain the dimension and structure of a healthy jaw, following tooth extraction. In today’s environment, where an implant is often the anticipated tooth replacement following extraction, it is important to preserve the bone after the tooth has been removed.

Orthodontics
Stowe Family Dentistry is proud to partner with a highly qualified, board-certified orthodontist. Our office is fully dedicated to Orthodontics every second Wednesday in addition to one Saturday morning each month. Referrals from all dental practices are welcomed. Dr. Fred Ziegler – Dr. Ziegler received his B.A. in Natural Sciences and Fine Arts from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA in 1979, and graduated from the University of Connecticut’s dental school in 1983. He received his Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Connecticut in 1986. He is board certified by the American Association of Orthodontics, and a member of the Vermont State Dental Society and the Vermont Association of Orthodontics. With 25 years of experience, Dr. Ziegler continues to enjoy orthodontics as a blending of fine art and science, and still gets excited by the difference he can make in the lives of his patients. He is originally from New Canaan, CT and now lives in Shelburne. He and his wife Marie have five children, Sam, Molly, Hunter, Holly, and Harrison. He enjoys bicycling, fly-fishing, and winter sports.
Braces
Today it is more and more common for adult patients to seek orthodontic treatment. We are fortunate to have two board-certified orthodontists at our office every week. They provide treatment to patients of all ages and also provide follow-up care. Many local dental practices refer their patients to Stowe Family Dentistry for orthodontic care - all patients are welcome.

Teeth Whitening
Whitening teeth can be done in many different ways. Here at Stowe Family Dentistry we offer an affordable take home option. We custom design trays that will hold a whitening gel on your teeth. We recommend using only whitening gels approved by the ADA. Safe and acceptable bleaching gels use a 10 percent concentration of carbamide peroxide to whiten teeth. Our custom designed trays can be worn nightly until you reach a desired shade. By offering a take home method it allows patients to use at their own convenience and they are able to whiten at a faster or slower pace depending on their tolerance to the treatment.

Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Chris Pazandak has been a practicing dentist since the late 1970s. Prior to moving to Stowe, Chris spent three years in the USAF Dental Corps and nine years in a solo dental practice in New Hampshire. His love of dentistry comes from the closeness to the people he serves and the dedicated team with whom he works. Chris received an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and a D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota. He is currently an executive board member of the Vermont State Dental Society, a member of the American Dental Association, and a member of the Academy of General Dentistry. His wife, Mary, is a Vermont native with whom he enjoys outdoor activities, including skiing, tennis, gardening and more. Chris has three grown daughters, Catie, Suzanne, and Allison, and four grandchildren.
