We may not be the right tax professionals for you, however, if you are more concerned about big refunds than remaining within the law. There are several well known tax preparers catering to police officers who are more than happy to put grossly inflated numbers on a tax return to get that big refund. Never mind that this is tax fraud, that their clients' career and retirement are put at risk, all clients of these tax preparers see are dollar signs. If you want this kind of "service," then don't come to us for tax services and planning. Instead, we will be happy to refer you to some very competent criminal tax attorneys in Beverly Hills. We do not mean to sound harsh but that is the reality of what we see on a daily basis when tax returns are prepared by amateurs, professional thieves or just incompetent people holding themselves out as tax preparers. We are convinced many of these tax preparers who "specialize" in the taxes of public safety personnel by using inflated deductions and other fraudulent means will eventually be caught by the IRS.

Identity Theft
In response to the enormous increase in Identity Theft throughout the country, in early 2019 we introduced the use of a secure client portal, Smartvault. The system uses bank-level encryption to allow documents to be exchanged between our office and our clients with high security.

Workers Compensation

Real Estate Transactions
Unlike CPAs and other tax professionals, as attorneys we have the ability to fully advise our clients on all aspects of a real estate transaction, not just those related to taxation. When you report either a sale, purchase, refinance, foreclosure or an exchange of real property, we will examine the consequences from both a tax and non-tax perspective. Most of the time, this analysis is included in our basic fee, but you should be aware that more complex transactions will incur an additional fee. Examples include the sale of a rental property, the sale or purchase of a multi unit or commercial rental property and a 1031, or like-kind exchange. We advise on the consequences of different types of financing and on the best form of holding title. We are also able to advise on property tax issues, such as exemptions for parent-child transfers and how to challenge an assessed valuation. Since we request our clients supply us with documents from their purchases and sales, whether or not completed, we are in a position to offer useful advice to minimize adverse consequences as well as detect irregularities our clients may not be aware of.

Foreclosure
Our firm charges a flat fee of $500 to report the sale of a rental. If you dispose of multiple rentals, this fee will be charged separate and apart for each property. We want to discuss the reason for this fee, the impact of the sale or foreclosure of a rental on tax liability and what is and what is not included in the $500 fee.
Tax Law
Doug Bodemann is an experienced Enrolled Agent, a designation he earned through rigorous testing by the Internal Revenue Service. Doug maintains his own practice in Pleasanton. He does not work directly for our firm, but is an independent professional to whom we refer our clients. Specifically, Doug is available to use in a "Kovel Engagement" if the need arises. This is a situation where an attorneys needs tax preparation completed but wants to remain in his role as an attorney with full attorney-client privilege. When acting in a "Kovel" capacity, Doug has the same attorney client privilege as the attorney he has been enaged by.
