Crowns
Esthetic Crown Lengthening was used to help this patient correct a gummy smile. She had a high smile line and what appeared to be very short teeth. The teeth were actually of normal size, but the gum tissue was hiding most of the tooth. By repositioning the gum tissue the entire tooth was exposed, creating a pleasing smile where the teeth are noticed, not the gums.

Deep Cleaning
This is a non-surgical approach to treat periodontal disease and often the place where we begin treatment. With the gums numb the deposits of plaque and calculus in the pockets are removed with ultrasonic and hand instruments. By thoroughly cleaning the roots the gums have the opportunity to reattach, sealing up the pockets where the bacteria can accumulate. Six to Eight weeks after the deep cleaning we re-evaluate your periodontal status to determine your response to treatment. After scaling and root planing many patients do not require any further periodontal treatment. If there are areas that do not adequately respond to non-surgical therapy, those sites can be treated surgically.

Dentures
Implants can be used to support a denture-like appliance where there are no remaining teeth. The denture-like appliance snaps over the attachments (that can be seen here) for a secure and comfortable fit. This can eliminate the sliding and shifting that makes chewing uncomfortable and causes sore spots.

Oral Surgery
Gum Surgery
This often called “Gum Surgery”. The gum is gently lifted away from the tooth to gain access to the infection on the root of the tooth and in the bone. This is necessary in the more advanced stages of the disease or when an area does not respond to non-surgical treatment. While the gum is separated from the tooth it is often possible to rebuild the lost bone with a bone graft. Guided tissue regeneration can be done to improve the healing of a bone graft. This uses a dissolvable membrane that is placed over the bone graft to allow the bone to heal independently of the gum above it. This is often referred to as periodontal regeneration.

When the implant is placed at the time of tooth extraction it is referred to as an “immediate implant.” The central incisor in this photo with a crown had fractured. The tooth was removed and at the same time, an implant placed. This photo shows the implant and healing cap in place. During the healing period, the patient wore a temporary. After healing, a crown was made to restore the implant and obtain a natural appearance.

General Dentistry
Dr Ravichandra (Ravi) Juluri completed dental school in India and practiced general dentistry in India and Nepal. He also taught at the College of Medical Sciences in Nepal before moving to the US in 2002. He has continued his education receiving a certificate in Periodontics and Oral Implantology along with a M.S. in Oral Biology from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. He has contributed to science and practice of dentistry by teaching implantology at Meharry Medical College where he received the 2009 Educator of the year from the American Academy of Periodontology. He has published multiple research and case reports in major dental journals and evaluates dental products for Dental Product Shopper and Dental advisor and has designed instruments for surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment. Dr. Juluri is very involved in the Illinois State Dental Society, building into the future of the profession. He has also served those in need as a volunteer dentist for Red Cross dental camps in Nepal and as a Remote Area Medical volunteer dentist in Nashville.
