Preventive Care

Dental Care
Dental Exam -- These are scheduled every 30 minutes and are for the rabbits that have been diagnosed with dental disease. The doctor performs the procedure as previously prescribed at the last health exam.
Vaccination
Again, make sure you save the original results you receive by mail from the lab; you will need these for proof to enter each show. Your ferrets also need to be up-to-date on distemper and rabies vaccinations or proof of acceptable distemper titer results.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Fennec Foxes are prone to many of the diseases we see in dogs. Many of these are husbandry related and can be prevented. Some common illness include: kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, pneumonia, skin infections/mites, eye infections or glaucoma, intestinal parasites, dental disease and histoplasmosis.
Comprehensive Examination
Health Exam or Recheck Exam -- This 30 to 60 minute appointment is available for avian and exotic pets that are ill (or have a new problem), for wellness exams, or to monitor progress on an existing problem. Either Dr. Horton, Dr. Moy, Dr. Giese, Dr. Nix, Dr. Valdes, Dr. Varble, or Dr. Strat will talk to you as she examines your pet and comes up with a plan to diagnose and treat any problems. This is also the time to discuss any husbandry questions, nutritional or behavioral concerns, or just ask general questions about your exotic pet.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fennec foxes can also carry some disease that may be contagious to people such as: Tuberculosis, Rabies, Leishmaniasis, and some intestinal parasites.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
They should be vaccinated yearly for Rabies, Canine Distemper, Canine Parvo virus and Canine Hepatitis. They should be tested annually for heart worm disease and be on heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick preventative. They should have annual fecal exams.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Acupuncture is most frequently used in veterinary medicine to relieve pain and muscle spasms and to increase nerve regeneration and circulation. It is used in treating arthritis, skin conditions, organ dysfunction, reproductive complications and immune disorders. There are several types of acupuncture that may be used based on patient needs, including: dry needle, aqua puncture (with B-12 or homeopathic injections), electro acupuncture or laser acupuncture.

Veterinary Cold Laser Therapy, or VCLT, has more recently entered the veterinarian world as a unique, effective therapy. The VCLT technique has been shown to help in treating arthritis pain, to accelerate wound healing, and to reduce acute tissue inflammation.

American Ferret Association sanctioned shows require ADV testing. The ONLY test accepted by the AFA is the Blue Cross Cep Test --a blood test. The test processing fee itself only costs $10 plus postage per ferret. If you are interested in showing your ferrets this year at the Greatest Ferret Show On Earth, or any other AFA sanctioned show, for convenience the GCFA has contacted several local veterinarians and has negotiated a technician fee of $20 per ferret for the blood draw and samples based on criteria detailed with the veterinarians below. Please read carefully because each veterinarian’s information may vary.
