Ophthalmology
For over fifty years, the experts at Jones Eye Clinic have served the Sioux City, Iowa area with comprehensive, compassionate care for general ophthalmology and virtually all eye diseases. After opening his solo practice in 1971, Charles E. Jones, M.D. began offering treatments for conditions such as pediatric strabismus and retinal detachments.
Macular Degeneration
The macula is a small area at the retina’s center, in the very back of the eye. This part of the eye is responsible for detailed central vision, as well as most color vision. Macular diseases don’t lead to total blindness but instead impact the central point of sight, leaving peripheral vision intact. Many diseases may affect this part of the eye, but Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common, with approximately 15 million people in the United States living with some stage of AMD.
Laser Eye Surgery
Healthy, non-smoking individuals with no severe medical or eye conditions that could impact healing are the best candidates for cosmetic eye surgery.
Cataracts
Changes in vision quality can be alarming. Cataracts are one of the most common eye diseases faced as part of aging and, if left untreated, can cause blindness.
Cataract Surgery
Most cataracts are part of the normal aging process as proteins and fibers in the lens begin to change over time. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than half of all Americans over 80 have experienced a cataract or had cataract surgery. However, cataracts can appear at any age, and even babies can have cataracts at birth. Causes of cataract formation can include exposure to UV light, previous eye trauma or surgery, high blood pressure, diabetes, long-term use of steroid medications, or a family history of cataracts at a young age.
Eye Exam
In addition to these specific tests, the doctor will perform a complete eye exam, including visual acuity and a dilated retinal examination.

Ultrasound
Our advanced surgical technique is an efficient outpatient procedure using topical anesthesia and mild sedation. Once the area is numb, a process called Phacoemulsification is used to break up the cataract with a tiny device that emits ultrasound waves, softening and breaking up the cataractous lens. After removing the lens pieces, the surgeon inserts an Intraocular Lens (IOL) to replace the cataract. Different types of IOLs are available, and our team will work with you to determine the best lens for your needs. (Learn more about intraocular lenses below.)

After finishing her residency at the University of Iowa—one of the country’s top ophthalmology programs for eye surgeons—Dr. Yian Jones discovered a passion for helping patients through plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and eyelids. During her prestigious fellowship at the Center for Facial Appearances in Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. Jones had the opportunity to work with the oculoplastic surgery pioneer Dr. Richard Anderson, giving her the expertise to perfect cutting-edge techniques for reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries for many facial and eyelid concerns.
