Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries. This is an important newsletter because I’m talking about several very timely topics, such as how can a child deal with anxiety; medication safety and how we can rid the world of infectious diseases such as smallpox (a success story) and Polio.

Lastly, in the kid’s section this month I’m talking about how they can deal with anxiety. I thought that it would be nice to talk about another disease which has a large influence from anxiety…irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Bring in school supplies and paperwork on the first day. Pack your backpack the night before school starts. In addition to basic school supplies (such as notebooks, pens, pencils, and a calculator), hunt down any of the school forms that were mailed to your family over the summer: immunization (shot) records, permission slips, and class schedules. Clothes are always a big issue. If your school doesn’t have a uniform, wear what makes you feel good, whether it's a brand-new school outfit or comfy older clothes. If you want to wear new shoes, wear them in the house a few days, or weeks, beforehand. You have a lot of pressure to “be in style,” but it’s impossible to stay in stay and most of us can’t afford to buy new clothes every few weeks.

Colon Cancer
The biggest problem with cow’s milk is that the protein in cow’s milk damages the human immune system. Protein from milk is absorbed into the blood intact which provokes an immune response from your body and may eventually lead to diseases. Some of the disease associated with milk include: Crohn's Disease, asthma, early sexual maturation, diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer, Leukemia, prostate Cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, sinusitis, autoimmune Disease, childhood anemia, diarrhea and constipation. Children are especially sensitive to intestinal colic, irritation and bleeding which leads to anemia and allergic reactions. In adults the problems include heart disease and arthritis, allergy, sinusitis, and leukemia, lymphoma and cancer.
Prostate Cancer
By the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health. Estrogen has been linked with breast cancer in women and testosterone with prostate cancer in men, while progesterone has been found to increase the growth of ovarian, breast and uterine tumors. Because children have relatively low natural levels of the sex hormones in their bodies, some experts believe that even small increases in the amount of hormones in their bodies are worrisome. Some experts feel that hormones in the foods children eat could be at least partly responsible for early puberty and many of the problems kids are having with obesity. In the face of all that’s unknown about hormones in our food supply, a cautious approach is definitely warranted. I recommend that families look closely at the milk they give their children (and drink themselves), and the type of meat your kids eat. Unfortunately, the hormone free milk and meats are much more expensive.
Lung Cancer
However, despite The Great American Smokeout and enormous efforts by multiple agencies, constant advertising and education, an estimated 47 million adults in the United States still smoke. Tobacco use can cause lung cancer, as well as other cancers, heart disease, and respiratory disease; and each year smoking is responsible for one out of every five people who die. The number of people who smoke throughout the world continues to rise as can be seen in this graph. Notice how the production of cigarettes has also shifted from the U.S. to other countries.

Autism
There are also some serious things to talk about, especially Autism and aging. Autism is being diagnosed more and more in children, getting a lot of attention from concerned parents and the medical establishment.
Epilepsy
To understand how cell phones affect the human body, think of the human body as being made up of electrical charges. The type of radiation emitted from mobile phones reacts with the electrical charges of the body and has an impact on the stability of cells in the body. This is important because scientists say that children who use mobile phones absorb as much as double the amount of radiation through their heads as adults. This is because the ears of children are thinner, the telephone is closer to the head and their cell growth and brain wave activity are not yet stable. One scientist said that the main effects are “neurological, causing headaches, lack of concentration, memory loss and sleeping disorders. It can also cause epilepsy in children.”

September is “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Month.” In my private practice I see many, many children AND adults who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I’ll talk about ADHD in both the kid’s and mom’s sections so there is a better understanding of what ADHD really means and how to effectively treat it.

Victims and perpetrators of bullying can experience mental health problems such as depression, insecurity, lower self-esteem, loneliness and anxiety, and in severe cases, can be driven to suicide. Some victims become angry and aggressive, and start bullying others. Teens who bully others are at risk for doing more serious forms of aggression such as sexual harassment, dating violence, workplace harassment, marital aggression, child abuse and elder abuse.

His exciting life has included being a civil engineer working for a railroad; serving as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division; a naval line officer in a nuclear ballistic submarine and a medical doctor in the U.S. Navy during which time he spent 4 years at the Pentagon working on healthcare policies for the military. After a long and successful career he retired from the military but continues to serve his country in the public and private sectors.

One of the most important topics we can talk about happens this month, colorectal cancer awareness. One of my friends just had surgery for colon cancer so this topic really hits close to home for me. I just had my own “virtual” colonoscopy (VC) in early March at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. I had a colonoscopy about four years ago during which they found and removed several polyps, so my friend’s illness pushed me to schedule another one for myself. I was aware of virtual colonoscopies, but it was only when I went to schedule my appointment that I learned I could have a VC instead of a conventional colonoscopy (CC). I chose the VC for two reasons one was I could immediately return to work after the procedure, unlike the CC where you are sedated and must go home, and two, the CT scan used for the VC will also look at the surrounding structures in the abdomen, so if there are other problems the VC will identify them. The hardest part of the procedure was the bowel preparation, which means you have a clear liquid diet for the 24 hours preceding the VC, have to take a laxative to clear out your bowel and then have to take two different radiographic contrast materials so the CT scanner can visualize your bowel. I knew I was in trouble when I picked up a grocery bag of materials from our pharmacy. The procedure the following morning was just as described, that is, slightly uncomfortable, but overall much less than the CC. I received my official report the same afternoon which showed I had not polyps.
Chemotherapy
Finally, naps are especially important for people who have just experienced illness, injury or chemotherapy. When you are resting your body is generating new and repairing old cells so even if you get enough sleep at night a nap can still help you heal faster.

Ankle Surgery
I’m 62 years old, and although I’m overweight, have been very healthy all of my life and have never been in the hospital overnight. I’d like to share my recent accident which could have changed my life forever. On January 30, 2010 we were experiencing the beginning of the first of many snowfalls in the Washington, D.C. area. As I was walking home from my office I slipped on ice and broke my ankle. I knew from the start that it was probably a fracture because of the intensity of the pain. I made myself get up and walk the mile to my house but I did some serious whining all the way home. I couldn’t go to the emergency room, because of the snow, until two days later. When I did make it to the emergency room the orthopedic resident started talking about surgery or letting the fracture heal naturally. As I have several patients who have had ankle surgery and who are struggling with the effects of having plates and pins in their body I was very happy when they decided that I did NOT need surgery.

Skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, but it is also one of the most common. The majority of skin cancer cases are caused by being in the sun too much. Over the years, there have been numerous warnings put out trying to tell you about the damage sun can do to your body. Try and stay out of the sun when it is at its peak, and to always wear sunscreen with a rating of SPF-30 or higher.
