A native Floridian, I grew up in Coral Gables. I was introduced to the great outdoors at an early age while fishing in the Everglades and the Gulf Stream and exploring Biscayne Bay. Many summers were spent at sleep-away camp in the mountains of North Carolina. After attending Coral Gables High School, I entered Princeton University and graduated in 1976 with a BSE in Chemical Engineering. After completing medical school at Harvard in 1980, I moved to San Francisco for a one-year internship. I then finished a three-year residency in ophthalmology at Stanford University in 1984.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula. The macula is a small area in the retina at the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details clearly and perform activities such as reading and driving. When the macula does not function correctly, your central vision can be affected by blurriness, dark areas or distortion. Macular degeneration affects your ability to see near and far and can make some activities - like threading a needle or reading - difficult or impossible.
Laser Eye Surgery
Regular medical eye examinations by an ophthalmologist are the best way to detect eye conditions early, while they can be treated. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) with special training and skill to diagnose, to treat the entire eye, as well as perform eye surgery. An optometrist (OD) also has special training and skill to diagnose and treat the entire eye.
Cataracts

Excessive evaporation of tears can also cause dry eye syndrome. Such evaporation may be caused by "meibomitis," which results from infection and inflammation of the meibomian glands in the eyelids. People with unusually large eyes, as well as those who suffer from thyroid disease, may also experience dry eye syndrome caused by excessive evaporation.
Diabetic Retinopathy
When blood vessels in the retina are damaged, they may leak fluid or blood, and grow fragile brush-like branches and scar tissue. This can blur or distort the images that the retina sends to the brain and is called diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasound
Dr. Weinkle performs no-stitch, no-patch cataract surgery utilizing phacoemulsification, and advanced form of microsurgery, to remove your cataract through a one-eighth inch self-sealing incision. With this method, cataracts can be removed using ultrasound and gentle suction, and sutures are rarely required. This technique results in rapid healing and faster visual recovery.

At Stanford, I met my wife, Susan, who was serving as chief resident in dermatology. We were married in May 1984 and moved to Bradenton, Florida in the fall of that year. For over twenty years I have been engaged in private solo practice in ophthalmology. I presently have offices in both Bradenton and Sarasota, and I maintain staff privileges at two local hospitals. My specialty is an outpatient cataract and refractive lens implant surgery.
