There are many possible reasons for heel pain including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, nerve problems, heel pad disorders, stress fractures, infection, arthritis (including gout), overuse injuries, sprains, and more. Dr. Sheridan is able to determine what the cause is for your particular heel pain through X-rays, ultrasounds, and diagnostic evaluations.
Cryotherapy
Foot lesions are marks or growths on the skin which can be due to hereditary conditions, infections, trauma, allergic reactions, bites, underlying medical conditions or even cancer (melanoma). Your podiatrist will take a small sample of the lesion’s tissue (biopsy) to properly diagnose the root cause of the lesion. How your podiatrist treats a lesion depends on their diagnosis, and can range from topical antibiotics/anti-fungals, to antimicrobial dressings, to cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or traditional surgery. Plantar warts (verrucas) are painful, thickened masses of skin on the bottom of the feet caused by the human papilloma virus, and are hard to get rid of. Your podiatrist may treat plantar warts with topical medications, cryotherapy, or laser therapy. If you have any type of skin issue on your feet, set up an appointment with your podiatrist who will examine, diagnose, and treat the issue accordingly.

We also offer our patients the option of minimally invasive surgery to treat certain foot and ankle conditions. This type of procedure is performed using tiny, specially-designed instruments for very small incisions that require minimal or no suturing. This precision surgery allows Dr. Sheridan more control with little to no damage to adjacent tissue, more predictable outcomes, and shorter recovery times. There is less risk of an infection than open surgery as well.
Bunions
A tailor's bunion, also known as a bunionette, is a condition characterized by the formation of a bony lump on the outer side of the little toe. This condition occurs when the fifth metatarsal bone, which is the bottom bone of the little toe, enlarges or shifts outward. Although less common than big toe bunions, a tailor's bunion can still cause discomfort and pain. Symptoms of a tailor's bunion include a swollen bump on the outer side of the toe, which can become red and painful, especially when it rubs against footwear. Tailor's bunions can affect one or both feet. Factors that contribute to the development of tailor's bunions include wearing ill-fitting shoes, being genetically predisposed to structural foot abnormalities, and having loose foot ligaments. A lower-than-normal fifth metatarsal bone or tight calf muscles can also contribute to the condition. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended. For help with a bunionette, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.
Ingrown Toenails
Many factors influence the likelihood of developing an ingrown toenail. The most common way ingrown toenails are formed is due to an incorrect method in how the toenails are trimmed. If you cut your toenails too short or cut them at an angle, you’re putting yourself at risk of getting this condition. Another main factor that contributes to ingrown toenails is the choice of footwear. Those who commonly wear tightly fitted shoes, such as high heels, that do not give the toes enough room, put too much pressure on the big toes. This can create an ingrown toenail. To alleviate the pain, a small piece of cotton may be fitted underneath the nail. However, in more serious cases, total removal of the nail may be necessary.

Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.

Calluses
Continued friction or pressure on the skin of the feet can cause corns, calluses and blisters. Corns and calluses cause the affected skin to harden. Corns have a hard center with swollen skin surrounding it and are usually smaller, deeper and sometimes painful, while calluses are larger and irregularly shaped. Your podiatrist may reduce your corn or callus by trimming or reducing it with a surgical blade or scalpel (respectively), treating it with medicated patches, pads or orthotics, or removing it surgically. With blisters, a protective bubble filled with serum is formed where the top layer of skin has separated from the underlying layers of skin. Your podiatrist may treat a blister by dressing it, offloading pressure from it with padding, and even treating it with antibiotics if it is infected. Cracked heels are caused when the skin on the heels becomes overly dry and pressure on them while standing causes them to split. These splits can deepen, bleed, and even become infected. Your podiatrist can treat cracked heels by carefully cutting off the layers of thickened, dead skin (debridement) and possibly finishing by sanding the cracks. If the heels are infected, the podiatrist will treat the infection and dress the area.
Fungus
Fungal toenails form due to an infection that gets in between either the cracks in the nail or possible cuts on the surrounding skin. When this occurs, it’s likely to discolor and thicken the nail; this makes it hard to care for or trim. The nail itself may also become brittle and could potentially crumble. The fungus under the nail may build over time, separating the nail from the bed and ultimately causing it to fall off if not treated properly.

Achilles Tendonitis
A condition that often results in serious heel pain is known as Achilles tendonitis. This condition may form when the Achilles tendon is damaged as a result of overuse. This particular injury can be very serious, as the Achilles tendon’s main function is to connect the lower half of the calf muscles to the heel bone. If this tendon becomes damaged, it may result in difficulty walking and completing everyday tasks, as well as cause extreme discomfort and pain.
Ankle Instability
Sports in which ankle sprains commonly occur include soccer, tennis, and cheerleading. Ankle sprains are caused by a tear in the ligament of the ankle, which typically occurs when the foot is rolled in an awkward manner. Ankle sprains are usually accompanied with bruising, swelling, and pain. Those who have sprained an ankle in the past may run the risk of developing chronic ankle instability. Those with this condition will generally feel a persistent pain, swelling, and tenderness in the ankle, and may experience the sensation of the ankle giving way when performing everyday activities.

Ankle injuries, particularly sprains, can be debilitating, causing pain and making it difficult to move. After a sprain, some patients may notice a cracking or popping sensation. Ankle cracking often affects those who have experienced multiple ankle sprains because repeated injuries can lead to instability in the joint. Over time, the ligaments that support the ankle become worn down, stretched, and weakened. As a result, they can no longer hold the bones securely in place. When the bones move back into their natural positions, a cracking or popping sound results. Attempting to self-diagnose or treat the issue can lead to further and far more serious complications. Tests such as X-rays can offer a more detailed view of the condition, and the treatment for ankle cracking will depend on the severity of the injury. In many cases, nonsurgical approaches can effectively manage the condition. In extreme cases, surgery may be a necessity. If you experience ankle cracking after a sprain, it's suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full exam, diagnosis, and treatment plan.

Diabetes can unfortunately cause many foot problems that often lead to a great deal of pain and discomfort. For example, poor circulation of the feet is often an issue among those with diabetes because it damages the nerves. When this occurs, it’s likely for one to develop peripheral neuropathy. Hammertoes get their name due to the abnormal appearance of the toe, in which it bends down like a hammer. A hammertoe’s shape is formed by a deformed bending in the toe’s middle joint. There are many factors that play into how hammertoes form. Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, jamming, or breaking it, can make the toe more susceptible to developing into a hammertoe. Age and gender also influence the likelihood of getting a hammertoe. Women have also been known to be more likely to develop a hammertoe compared to men. You’re also more likely to develop this condition as you age. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, have been known to influence the likelihood of forming a hammertoe.
