Sleep Disorders
Fernando Miranda, M.D. is the founder and Neurologist for Bright Minds Institute. After graduating from medical school in 1972, he completed his internship and residency in Neurology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. His post graduate training was in Behavior and Cognition at Baltimore City Hospitals and Johns Hopkins Hospital. He co-founded the Maryland Regional Sleep Disorders Center for the Johns Hopkins Neurology Department and Baltimore City Hospitals. Dr. Miranda was on the faculty in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medical School, served as chairperson for the Division of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque, NM and has maintained a private practice in Vero Beach, Florida, and San Francisco since l989. Dr. Miranda is board certified in neurology, electroencephalography, neurological rehabilitation, sleep disorders, and evoked potentials. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Miranda has written numerous articles and book chapters on sleep disorders, electroencephalography, cognition and attention disorders.

Neurology
Cognitive Neurology is a discipline of neurology that deals with the relationship between the brain structure, the brain electrical activity, and brain function. Brain function is expressed by judgment, memory, language, reading, spatial orientation, motor performance, and sensory integration. In addition, behavior is one of the manifestations of brain function. These include: mood, socialization, attention, and forethought.
Autism
The expert should have an MD with training in Cognition and Behavior or a PhD in psychology, specializing in ABA therapy for autism, and have years of practical experience in this area. The expert must recommend a curriculum; provide training in ABA theory and practice, an assessment of the child; supervision and feedback for parents, therapists; and overall responsibility for program integrity.
Epilepsy
Video EEG simply records a video of your child at all hours, particularly during sleep, while he/she is also wired up to an EEG machine. Technicians can then compare behavior with EEG data. VEEG is useful for separating "hysterical" (for whatever reason) individuals from those with true epilepsy or other disorders.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that begins in early childhood and may continue into adulthood. Being restless and very easily distracted are the most common features of the adult disorder. It is often called by an older name, attention deficit disorder (ADD). Between 3% and 7% of all school age children have ADHD. Some children with ADHD will carry symptoms into their adult years.

An educational psychologist is a PhD-level mental health expert who specializes in assessment and consultation relating to educational issues, and learning disabilities. Educational psychologists use a range of assessment tools, including intelligence and academic achievement testing.

MRI
A neurological examination may include two elements, an assessment of neurological functioning, and an examination of “soft” (subtle) neurological signs if a learning disability is suspected. An assessment will include a family and medical history, as well as physical examination of specific neurological functions. In some cases, a neurological examination may also include more specialized procedures such as an EEG to measure electrical activity in the brain, visual evoked response tests assess how well information travels from the eyes to the occipital lobes (visual cortex), MRI scans, or other brain-imaging techniques.

Lesions
An MRI provides an anatomical overview of the brain which shows the physical structure. Typically, this is used to rule out any symptoms due to any physical anomalies, for example: lesions. Our medical staff will make a determination of whether you or your child needs an MRI scan after your initial evaluation.

Physical Therapists

Physical Therapy
Therapists are trained to treat all areas of gross motor dysfunction including: coordination issues, gait deviations, poor balance, developmental delays, strength deficits, endurance problems, orthopedic issues and sensory integration dysfunction. Typically therapy is on a weekly basis (1-2 hours per day 2-3 times per week). The therapist offers an intensive program (3 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 3 weeks). During all sessions children have access to specialized equipment from Europe (the Therasuit and the Universal Exercise Unit).
Occupational Therapy
Therapists are trained to treat all aspects of fine motor dysfunction including: activities of daily living (dressing, feeding, bathing, etc.), handwriting problems, sensory integration dysfunction, strength deficits, assistive technology needs and feeding. Typically therapy is on a weekly basis (1-2 hours per day 2-3 times per week).
