Dental Examination
When these are unable to erupt, patients typically need combined orthodontic and surgical treatments to correct the concern. All young patients should receive a thorough dental examination to ensure that adult teeth are present between the ages of 7 and 10.
X-rays
Even with modern improvements in traditional X-ray technology, digital X-rays expose patients to significantly less radiation. A patient can reduce radiation exposure by 10%, 20%, or more with a digital radiograph. And while all types of dental X-rays expose you to very little radiation, it’s always best to reduce exposure whenever possible.

Teeth Cleaning
The first line of defense against gum disease is a unique type of cleaning called “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, an ultrasonic cleaning device is used to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth where regular cleaning devices can’t reach: under the gum line, on the tooth, and around the root.

Veneers
The extent of your reconstruction will depend on the condition of your teeth. Your dentist may recommend crowns, bridges, veneers, or implants to restore your smile to its best possible condition. Flap Surgery
During pocket reduction procedures (also known as “flap surgery”), we fold back the gum tissue and remove the bacteria hiding underneath, as well as the hardened plaque and tartar that have collected. We may also remove any tissue that is too damaged to survive. We then sew the healthy tissue back into place. Now that the tooth and root are free of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, and the pockets have been reduced, the gums can reattach to the teeth.
Maxillofacial Surgery
At San Antonio Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, P.A., we prefer our patients to practice good oral hygiene between office visits. Part of that process includes flossing, which Dr. Mazock, Dr. Salazar, and Dr. Coleman will tell you, is the process of cleaning between the teeth to remove food and debris from the areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. When food is allowed to remain between the teeth, it provides a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause periodontal disease.
Tooth Extractions
Sometime during adolescence, most individuals develop a third set of molars at the back of their mouth known as the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are most likely the last teeth in your upper and lower jaw. Every year, countless people get these teeth extracted. Orthodontic intervention – Once we realize that a patients’ canines have not erupted and seem incapable of doing so spontaneously, an orthodontist will likely be needed to place bracket and wire braces on either the surrounding teeth or the full smile.

General Dentistry
Dr. Mazock joined the United States Navy and completed advanced training in general dentistry while serving with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Forces at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina. Shortly after, Dr. Mazock began his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Texas A&M, Baylor University Medical Center-Dallas. He continued to stay involved with research and coauthored many surgical articles on bone grafting and trauma.
