Dental implants are made of titanium. A completed implant includes three pieces: the implant itself (a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone), the abutment (a connector between the implant and crown) and the crown (the part that is visible and looks like a tooth). Dr. Buckley, Dr. Edgin, Dr. Franco, Dr. Hanna, Dr. Rominger, Dr. Tiner, Dr. Verrett or Dr. Johnson will place the implant and the abutment, and the crown will be completed by your general dentist.

Root Canal Treatment
Isolated injuries to teeth are quite common and may require the expertise of various dental specialists. Oral surgeons usually are involved in treating fractures in the supporting bone or in replanting teeth that have been displaced or knocked out. These types of injuries are treated by one of a number of forms of splinting (stabilizing by wiring or bonding teeth together). If a tooth is knocked out, it should be placed in salt water or milk. The sooner the tooth is re-inserted into the dental socket, the better chance it will survive. Therefore, the patient should see a dentist or oral surgeon as soon as possible. Never attempt to wipe the tooth off, since remnants of the ligament that hold the tooth in the jaw are attached and are vital to the success of replanting the tooth. Other dental specialists may be called upon such as endodontists, who may be asked to perform root canal therapy, and/or restorative dentists who may need to repair or rebuild fractured teeth. In the event that injured teeth cannot be saved or repaired, dental implants are often now utilized as replacements for missing teeth.

In more complex cases, the bones of the upper and lower jaw may be repositioned to increase the size of the airway ( Orthognathic surgery ). This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires 1 to 2 days overnight stay in the hospital.
Maxillofacial Surgery
A graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Rominger went on to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1986 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1991, both at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). His post-graduate training includes a Fellowship in Anesthesiology at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas in 1987, and a General Surgery Internship at UTHSCSA in 1992. He completed his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UTHSCSA in 1993.
Tooth Extractions
The length of your surgery depends on a variety of factors including the level of impaction of your teeth and the number of teeth being removed. However, most wisdom teeth extractions can be performed in about an hour. During that time you will be kept comfortable with anesthesia.
Bone Grafting
You may be surprised to hear that your jawbone is a lot like a muscle, in that it must be stimulated regularly in order to maintain its volume. Therefore, when a tooth is extracted (or falls out naturally), the jawbone begins to deteriorate almost immediately. In fact, studies show that within a year of tooth loss, there is a 25% decrease in bone width. Thankfully, dental implants can take the place of natural teeth to provide the stimulus needed by the jaw. If done early, this greatly reduces the need for bone grafting down the road.

Orthodontics
If your TMJ disorder has caused problems with how your teeth fit together, you may need treatment such as bite adjustment (equilibration), orthodontics with or without jaw reconstruction, or restorative dental work. Surgical options such as arthroscopy and open joint repair restructuring are sometimes needed but are reserved for severe cases. Our surgeons do not consider TMJ surgery unless conservative treatment options have failed and the jaw can’t open, is dislocated and non-reducible or has severe degeneration.

General Dentistry
Dr. Verrett is a San Antonio native and received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio before entering the United States Air Force and completing his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 2012. Following residency, Dr. Verrett served as the Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he instructed Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residents from 2012-2016.
