Received a quote from Mike Warren to have a generator purchased and installed. I agreed to the purchase and installation, and when the generator arrived it was delivered and set up by Huckleberry Propane instead. I already had Huckleberry scheduled to install the propane tank and run the line to the generator, and they managed to perform their installation before I heard anything from Mike Warren. When the Huckleberry installer was here, he commented on how Mike should have gotten back to me by now. I called and left a message, and got a call back from Mike telling me he was unable to do the installation. Provided no alternative installation date. He told me to have Huckleberry perform the electrical installation as well. When I called him back to request a refund of the portion of the downpayment I made to him that I had assumed was for his labor to install it, I received a call back a week later, after three messages. Mike said that he purchased the generator from Huckleberry at a markup (Kohler 14RESA retails for $3300, said Huckleberry charged him $4200) and he added a "standard markup" of 20%, bringing it to the $5000 deposit that I had paid him.

Ultimately, this feels like he never intended to perform the installation, and instead just wanted to take a free $800 markup. I'm assuming there's no recourse apart from spreading the word. The fact that he didn't make any effort to contact me about setting up an install date, not contacting me about being unable to schedule the install, and not providing an alternative date to install it leaves me wondering why he would have accepted the job in the first place if he was too busy to finish an install that was agreed upon 3 months prior to this.
