Physical Therapists

Physical Therapy
Several years ago, we were invited to teach a Physical Therapy class at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. The first half of the course (taught by Steve Prendergast, CO) focuses on general orthotic treatment modalities that Physical Therapist and Orthotists frequently have in common as well as the effect that orthotic devices have on human locomotion (gait). The second half of the semester (taught by Norbert Fliess, CP) is all about teaching the Physical Therapist how to manage their patients with various levels of amputations, their prosthetic devices and how to maximize their efficiency and coordination with their prostheses. There is an emphasis on the team approach and professional relationship building required to insure the highest level of care that orthotic and or prosthetic patients depend on.
Orthotics and Prosthetic Therapy
All of our practitioners have completed a four year baccalaureate degree, been trained in our field of study and passed the standards set fourth by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics Inc. (ABC). We are all required to attend continuing education classes each year in order to maintain our certification.

Foot Orthotics
I was recently introduced to the TurboMed FS3000 via some promotional information forwarded to me by our area representative. Always skeptical, I watched some of their YouTube videos and saw patients with obvious deficits benefiting from this brace with remarkably improved gait. While the design looks to be a little “bulky” as it is attached to the exterior of the shoe, the function is very appropriate for patients with drop foot. The brace encourages closer to normal, efficient gait while providing some medial lateral stability as well. Because it is not fitted inside of the shoe, corrective arch supports (foot orthotics) may be used in conjunction with the brace and the patient will not find it necessary to purchase larger shoes to accommodate the brace.
