Dr. Berwald will complete an in depth medical and dental health history. She will complete a thorough clinical and radiographic periodontal examination. An oral cancer screening will also be done at this time.

Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. We will make recommendations based on your individual situation. Dr. Berwald believes in conservative treatment to obtain treatment goals and periodontal health when indicated.
Deep Cleaning

For the first four to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your restorative dentist designs the final bridgework or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Flap Surgery
These treatment modalities allow the periodontist to gain access to the root of the tooth for removal of plaque, calculus and diseased tissue. They also allow visualization of the bone, so the doctor can evaluate the bony changes due to periodontal disease and treat it accordingly.
Osseous Surgery
During flap surgery the gum is carefully retracted from the tooth, the area is debrided from infection and the gum is then sutured back in place. Flap surgery may sometimes be accompanied by osseous surgery, osseous (bone) reshaping or removal, in order to create a better physiologic bone/soft tissue morphology. This helps to facilitate better home care and increases the longevity of the teeth.
Tooth Extractions
A dental extraction, commonly known as getting a tooth pulled, is one of the most common dental procedures. The extraction involves rocking the tooth back and forth to ease it out of its socket for simple removal. Stubborn teeth may be removed in sections.
