Pediatric Care
The National Institutes of Mental Health studied the diagnosis of ADD, and concluded that it is a completely valid medical problem and can be accurately diagnosed by specialists. The American Medical Association concluded that the diagnosis is valid, and that most individuals with ADD are never diagnosed or treated. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees that medications are the most effective treatment. The American Psychiatric Association has created criteria for diagnosis that all medical organizations accept as valid. ADD is definitely not just normal inattentiveness or “laziness.” Willpower, attitude, and upbringing seem to have little or nothing to do with it. ADD is clearly a medical disorder with a definite medical treatment.
Primary Care
Because of doctors’ disinterest in headaches, many headache patients are dissatisfied with their headache treatment. In fact, 38% of headache patients admit to being “turned off” by their doctor when it comes to treating their headaches. Also, 50% of headache patients are incorrectly diagnosed by their primary care physician—leading to improper treatment of their headaches.
Sleep Disorders
In the past 30 years medical science has discovered many of the causes and cures for clinical depression, anxiety disorders, ADD, obesity, and sleep disorders. All of these conditions involve problems with proteins called "neurotransmitters." These proteins are used by the brain to activate its many different circuits. There are probably over 300 different neurotransmitters in the human brain. So far, we have identified about 50.

Anxiety disorders are very common: 25% of Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. These anxiety disorders cause untold suffering, both physical and emotional. Because the symptoms resemble other physical illnesses, anxiety disorders cause unnecessary emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and even invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterizations and endoscopies of the GI tract, Many persons who have been diagnosed with “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” or with “Mitral Valve Prolapse” have an anxiety disorder.

Post-partum depression is a clinical depression in new mothers that occurs in the weeks or months after childbirth. Like PMS, it is probably due to dramatic changes in estrogen and progesterone levels. Post-partum depression should be treated quickly since it can adversely affect the infant’s mental and emotional development.

In spite of the impact of headaches on both the individual and our society, doctors generally have not taken headaches very seriously. Most physicians receive no special training in evaluating or treating headaches. Even physicians who specialize in neurology usually have little interest in treating headaches.
