One of the main injuries that can occur in an auto accident is whiplash. Whiplash is a sudden movement of the head being pushed quickly backward and then forward. It can even happen side to side. Over the years of treating sports injuries, I have developed several treatment protocols that have benefited many athletes: from those who thought their athletic careers were over but were able to regain their position on the field, all the way down to the many “weekend warriors” who thought they were going to have to slow down but were able to stay very active. It is very rewarding to help these people because they thought they were going to have to give up being active. Many of the protocols I use have grown from the experience gained in treating these conditions.

So what kind of headaches do many of these non-sinus or non-migraine sufferers have? TMJ headaches. TMJ stands for tempormandibular joint (the name of the jaw joint). The condition is called TMJ dysfunction or TMD (tempormandibular dysfunction). Basically, your jaw apparatus is out of balance and the jaw muscles are in spasm. TMJ headaches are a type of muscle-tension headache. If you have temple headaches, you probably have TMJ headaches. I don’t care how many people (or doctors) tell you that you have migraines. TMJ headaches are misdiagnosed most of the time! (You can have both types of headaches as well.) The good news: you can find a very effective treatment for TMJ headaches in this chapter.
