Irritable Bowel Syndrome
More well known than inflammatory bowel disease is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but there are some important distinctions between the two, even though they can cause similar symptoms. Inflammatory bowel disease is more serious than irritable bowel syndrome. This is because it causes permanent damage to the bowel tissue, while IBS does not. Further, IBS can often be managed with medication, while IBD can need corrective surgery to cure the patient completely.

Colon Cancer
Both men and women at average risk for colorectal cancer should begin screening for colon polyps at age 50. Recent evidence and guidelines from the American College of Gastroenterology, recommend beginning at age 45 for African Americans as this ethnic group has demonstrated a higher risk for precancerous polyps as well as colon cancer. If you have a family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, or certain conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, you may require screening at an even earlier age or more frequent interval. There are rare hereditary colon cancer syndromes which run in families, where colonoscopy is recommended at a much younger age and repeated frequently.

There are two types of dysphagia: oropharyngeal and esophageal. The kind of dysphagia that a patient is suffering from depends on what part of the swallowing process is affected. Oropharyngeal dysphagia occurs when the patient has trouble beginning the act of swallowing. Usually, this is caused by a failure from the brain to communicate with the nerves in the mouth or throat. Some common neurological disorders that can cause this lack of communication are Parkinsonâ€™s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as medical trauma such as stroke. Oropharyngeal dysphagia may cause the patient to gag, cough, or feel as though food or drink is going down the windpipe or up the nose when they swallow.

Ulcer
A stomach or intestine ulcer, otherwise known as a peptic ulcer, is essentially an open and sometimes bleeding sore that forms when the inner lining of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum ruptures. The lining is weakened when digestive acids break down the protective barrier. This causes significant burning abdominal pain that can last for days, weeks or even months at a time. This becomes worse when the stomach is empty. Antacids will sometimes give a brief respite or eating foods that are gentle on the stomach. However, ulcers will often return even after they have healed if the patient hasnâ€™t sought medical attention.
